Quart Flat Tops

#1

Post by Plusonegolfer » Thu Sep 05, 2019 10:31 am

If there is someone who has good knowledge of the various quart flats I would like to chat. Looking for prices, rarity factor etc of the various ones. I have the two Esslinger’s but not the Croft or others. Any Intel would be appreciated. What’s the going price for the Esslinger’s in super on-grade condition?

I would think $3,000 for the beer and a little less for the Ale would not be out of bounds.... Just my opinion.

Too funny... A couple of weeks ago I went through all the books and found there are a couple that are Not in USBC or BCU- maybe 1 or 2 in Class and then something that was only in the Conetop bible or one of the BCM books... Haven't typed it up yet cuz I wanted the composite Quart list from here but it goes to a 404 error. Without the Ballantine's I think there are 16 like the ones shown. I know there has to be a thorough composite but haven't seen it yet.

Would like to get the Ess. Ale in all the different can shapes
If you have Schmidt scenic cans: white back, 12oz drafts, and most gold ones in either flat or zip I'd love to talk. Also interested in irtp and older Gluek labels.

Matt Menke's site has the Quart Composite as well. I think it is Onefullquart.com If that isn't it, look in the reference section for the correct email address. might be .net

Quart flats 1930's, excluding the 50's Ballantine flats. If there are more I would like to know.

Croft Cream Ale, non OI
Esslinger's Premium Ale, OI
Esslinger's Premium Beer, OI
Esslinger's Premium Bock Beer, OI
Liebmanns Cream Ale, non OI
Rheingold Beer, non OI
Rheingold Scotch Ale, non OI
Rheingold Extra Dry Beer, non OI
Valley Forge Beer 3 lines text, OI
Valley Forge Beer 4 lines text, OI
Rams Head Ale 3 lines text, OI
Rams Head Ale 4 lines text, OI

In my opinion the Rheingold Extra Dry Beer, Liebmanns Cream Ale, and Esslingers's Bock are the toughies. The others can be obtained in outdoor condition with a lot of effort.
Someday soon we will have the quart composite posted. Changes and additions happen every day.

I figured out why I thought there was another can- the Liebmann in only the black and white section of the Class book threw me. So, here is what I have- only 2 additions to Charles' list above- both cans Bob Porter sent Lilek for the supplement.

Brand Book Description Comments
Croft Cream Ale 206-1 irtp
Esslinger Ale 208-11 L241 OI irtp Only qt flat in CTB1022
Esslinger Beer 208-15 L244 OI irtp
Esslinger Bock L248 OI irtp
Liebmanns Cream Ale 214-9 irtp
Ram’s Head Ale 217-16 L715 4 lines text OI irtp
Ram’s Head Ale L714b 4 lines text OI irtp Mpc 68-AX 1 dot above x
Ram’s Head Ale 217-17 L716 3 lines text OI irtp
Rheingold Scotch Ale 218-5 Irtp
Rheingold Extra Dry 218-6 Irtp
Rheingold Beer 218-9 irtp
Valley Forge Beer 220-12 L841 4 lines text OI irtp
Valley Forge Beer 220-13 L842 3 lines text OI irtp
Valley Forge Beer L840b 4 lines text OI irtp Mpc 68-AX 1 dot Sim L841

Crud I made this a table in Word if anyone wants it that way PM me. For idle speculation purposes if there are any yet to be discovered labels my money is on a Valley Forge Bock. Seems less likely any of the IRTP only brands were ever made as earlier OI cans. Anyone have thoughts on that. Or any other cans I missed? Total of 14 with the two variations. Is the idea that brewers were talked into running these just once (maybe Scheidt's twice?) and that was it for making these beasts?

I intentionally left the Ballantine's off of this as they seem to be their own, other, kind of thing.... Andy

Great list. Any idea how many of each are in existence and how many, if any, are known in on-grade condition?

Here's the list in Excel. I don't differentiate the Scheidt's quarts by date, but some may.

Miss entering one quart. See next post.ed

Late to the conversation... been on vacay.

I let the site go down since the computer I used to build it became so outdated that I could no longer upload new versions, and a 3yr old is keeping me so busy I really can't take enough time yet to rebuild it on another platform. And I don't have a massive quart collection as an information resource or street cred, and so on. Someday...

Values are pretty well established on the Esslinger's Ale and Beer, but the others turn up so rarely in indoor condition that it's a crapshoot. Depends on who wants one that week, or if it has instructions or goats or whatever the hot detail is at the moment. Like Charlie says, if you're really stubborn about it you can eventually collect a half dozen different ones in sub grade 3 condition. Beyond that you'd have to be rather deep-pocketed.

Rarity is a little simpler to peg. There is one Esslinger Bock flat in outdoor shape as seen on this site, and perhaps a clean one out there in some closet collection. Bob Porter said he saw one walk into a PA show many years ago and then walk right back out, and if you're going to believe anyone's memory in this hobby that's a pretty good place to start.

For many years there was just one Rheingold Extra Dry, from the NJ landfill find, the one pictured. See the BCCA magazine for that. Then about five years ago one popped up on eBay from an antique dealer who listed it sans volume. I was one of two collectors to notice the proportions weren't of the 12oz variety, no slouch in its own right, but I had little cash on hand and ended up #2 bidder.

In a tier below that is the Liebmann's Cream Ale, of which a dumper surfaces every 15 years or so. Have never seen a clean one, though.

Below that are the other Rheingolds, again may not exist ongrade but dumpers turn up about every 10 years or so.

I'm not qualified to parse the different Scheidt variations, only ever had one of each brand so I can't say which are tougher. Croft I've seen one indoor, no top on it, and the 40 or from Mr. Lang's Hilltop dump. Those change hands every once in a while.

And the two basic Esslingers are in the bottom tier, but bumped up in value because they're OI and graphics are catchier than all these others.

So, to answer the OP, there is no road map on value. Good luck!
Better to drive 950 miles and kick asz than go a thousand miles and get nothing.

Matt

Great thoughts on the rarity and value of the various flat top quarts. Goog stuff. I've dug the Rheingold Scotch Ales and the Liebmann's Cream Ales on numerous occasions up in Maine but never the Rheingold Extra Dry Beer or Rheingold Beer. Makes sense, I guess, as Maine was ale country back in the day.

The Good Guys were carrying a nice offgrade Croft around not long ago, and that means Gene had upgraded. I'm not sure if Gene had others beyond the pair of Esslinger's.

Shoot Dan an email. He listed about 40 of Gene's cans on his site a couple months ago and has put a few in auctions, but aside from that his only marketing of the collection thus far is a "Now accepting wishlists" email he sent out to guys on his mailing list.

Thanks Marc, crawled all over the site but nada.... Really want the Ess Ale since I have the cone and it can be had hopefully... Andy
Shoot Dan an email. He listed about 40 of Gene's cans on his site a couple months ago and has put a few in auctions, but aside from that his only marketing of the collection thus far is a "Now accepting wishlists" email he sent out to guys on his mailing list.

Marc
I have both Ess flat top quarts in great condition - don’t know if you even could upgrade them. I would part with them, but would want to move them as a pair. Reach out if interested.

I'm a little late on this one as I was out of the country when it started. Here's my flat top quarts.
