Bilow - Pronunciation?

#1

Post by DaddyDewrop » Mon Jul 08, 2019 9:11 am

When I was a kid, we pronounced Bilow like it rhymed with pillow. I'm now wondering if it's actually pronounced as buy-low??? Anybody know for sure?

I always assumed it was a store-brand for a "Bilow" store somewhere. And if its a store name, I assumed its a budget store pronounced 'buy-low'. But then I googled and found this, according to Buzzfeed:

"Bilow Garden State Beer actually has no ties to New Jersey. It was a house brand in Henry Bilow’s chain of liquor stores, and brewed in Shamokin, PA."

So proper pronunciation would depend on Henry's family's preference?

The 1979 Happy New Year can (and others) says "Brewed especially for Ludwig C. Bilow, Inc. by Walter Brewing Company, Eau Clare, Wis."

I always assumed it was either like 'pillow' or like 'below' (bee-low). I would have never thought 'buy-low'...…..

There was (and may be one or two left?) a small chain of liquor stores in southern NJ named Bilow's Liquors, which had Bilow Garden State beer as their "house" beer. The beer was contract brewed in a variety of places, with the cans coming from Hammonton in the 60's and early 70's, with one Hammonton can (and the oddball with the colors reversed) in the late 70's before switching to Walter's in WI for filling their cans. I've seen bottle labels, but never bothered to check where they were filled. It is entirely possible that F&S may have filled bottles. The proper pronunciation of Bilow would actually be something like "Beelov", but the stores were referred to as "Buy-Low".

I drank some of Hammonton's products towards the end of their run, and they were uniformly awful. I drank some Walter's products as well (although I'm not specifically sure that I ever had Bilow's Garden State) and don't remember them to be any better or worse than the typical beer I had to drink for the can.
