Adolph Grenke's Morphy auction changed the landscape, didn't it? Dan Morean refused to cede the auction business to the traditional auction houes, and it would be bad business for the rest of the hobby to cede it to Dan.

I guess this is how eBay will finally get some competition, at least on high-end stuff in our category. Seems like soooo many collectors have soured on eBay's fees and inability to create a level playing field.
Better to drive 950 miles and kick asz than go a thousand miles and get nothing.

Dan's auctions haven't been only high-end stuff, and the Good Guys look to have made good on their "something for everyone" statement.

Clean cans up to about $2K and medium-tough cans in grade1/1- still rock on eBay, but most everything else is a crapshoot. Many buyers have soured on seller dishonesty, most notably shill bidding. Some sellers, such as Ron Small, do very well because of exemplary business practices over the course of many years.

But, eBay's auctions are rinky-dink affairs. Dan and the Good Guys are putting on professionally run events in the traditional auction style. I find it quite enjoyable to sit all afternoon and watch the whole thing go down. I've even picked up a couple of stellar deals on good cans.

At the end of the day, it's another avenue for adding items to your collection, acquiring data to help yourself on future purchases, or simple entertainment. I've been outspoken regarding my distaste for auctions in the past, but that's changed with the increased legitimacy this type of auction brings.
