I Got this oddball 1939 Pabst Export Promotional can. Got some kind of Prize in the can. Should I cut the can open & see what's in there? I know with this post I might seem to be blowing Hot Air but I thought just maybe, maybe some one might be Interested in seeing this can? Let me know if anybody has seen one of these before? Rand? Chris? Anybody? Thanks for your time. Much appreciated. LEON.

Very cool. Did you get that at Wyandotte today?

I would suggest leaving it original. With enough detective work, you can figure out what is inside. However, if you open it, you can never make it original again.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2019 Shows Attended

* Luck O' The Irish, March 16, Erlanger Kentucky

Wow! Amazing.....not only have I never seen one, never heard of it either. Agree....don't open it. It's only ever original once. Beautiful!

I guess I should of added my Sarcasm meter pic when I asked should I open it, I wasn't serious, it was a Joke. If Rand never seen one it must be rare?

Pretty safe in saying it's rare....but wouldn't hang my history on that.... likely many others that have turned over as many Pabst OIs as me.

Leon do you have one of those bore scopes that hook to a phone? Might be able to see through the slot with one of those. How old is the sticker? Period to the can age? There is no zip code for the tavern address which is strange.....

Very interesting item you have Leon. This is pre zip code as that program was ramped up in 1963.

Based on the slot created in the can, I would say that when mailed the can had a little tab that stuck out of the slot, maybe tacked down with a spot of glue to stay in place on the journey through the US mail infrastructure. Could have been paper, maybe fabric. Can see the tab pulling a blue ribbon banner or sash from the can. What is in the can today - could be what was mailed in it - but it could have been added in to the can at any point. Pulling a steel can of that vintage open from that slot would not be a practical advertising gimmick....

Also - you can see something in there - it looks like paper. you might be able to shake the can and have a corner of it poke through the slot, and at that point you may be able to carefully work it out with a tweezer.

The Lewandowksi Brothers had an example in their collection and I've searched high and low for one ever since they sold their collection. (pictured here courtesy of Marc Tracy, circa 1997?)

It's 100% legit, verified in part by a "dumper" turning up in a $5 box at a show (thanks Eric Menning). The paper mailing label was long gone though and the can was not opened on either end.

The fact that they took the time to remove the IRTP statement from the side further points to it being a real thing.

I'd send it to Art and having him professionally remove an end, retrieve the paper and put the lid back on.

Thanks for posting, Chris. I knew I had seen one, but I wasn't sure if it was you or the Lewandowskis who had it and I don't seem to have the photos on my PC. I figured I'd dig out my hard copy photos and look for it if you didn't have something.

You might recall that Chuck Hillyer specialized in Pabst and won best display at CANvention one year with his Pabst cans. When Chuck sold his collection, the twins got all of his Pabst cans.

I didn't notice it did not have the IRTP Statement until Chris mentioned it so I had to go look at mine again, sure enough not there? Not even painted over? just never there & deleted from the painting process? Interesting. Sorry for more hot air blowing. :smt014 Leon.

I don't know who got it, but their list was a tiny portion of their collection. They needed about 80 cans to complete the known 12 oz. flattops when I met them, so they had well over 6,000 cans when they decided to get out.

There list goes all the way down to the low end of $50 & up from there. I assume they wanted more then $50 for there similar Promo Pabst. A lot of there low budget less then $50 cans they had me sell for them on ebay, I know I picked up many many totes from them at Frankenmuth & sold them by the Totes on ebay & thats was a few hundred cans. I think they reserved certain cans for people that never made it on the list. I know they were reserving the Regal for me so was kinda upset & disappointed to see it on the list. After I got the Regal they said they had many many people inquiring & asking about it. Sorry to stray off subject. LEON.

 Hopefully you have a winner inside the can for $1,000 and turn it into the current Pabst Brewing Company owners for the $ adjusted for inflation.

leon, I'd bet a pair of dental picks could be used to work both ends of the "prize" and get it coming out the slot. I'll send you a pair if you don't have any.

I Got some good news. After about 1 hour of shaking the can around trying to align these tabs or edge of paper to the slit was not easy. after 3 or 4 tries of aligning & trying to pry/poke it out I finally did it. And  WOW, I can tell you very Interesting what I found inside. Not seen by anybody in 80 years or since 1939. Very Interesting. LEON.

A simple piece of paper that says winner or loser for a tapper of PBR- that’d be my guess. Now, if it says winner winner, we all know...you win a chicken dinner. Cool can LEON! Ziphippie

OK, Here's the Deal, now that I got everybody hanging on the edge of there seats left in Suspense waiting for the Reveal. NOT. Not yet. My Good Buddy Chris Taylor has been wanting to do a Article on this can for years but with out the prize inside I guess any Article would come up short & seem inadequate. Now that a can has been found with the original prize or surprise inside I guess now would be a good time to do a Article. SO, you'll have to hold onto your seats a little longer & wait for a Future BCCA Article on this very Interesting can & Item inside. In the mean time the can is safely locked up in a safety deposit box & then will be delivered to Chris's Residence in a Armored Car. Thanks in advance for your Patience. LEON.
