Unpictured Washington State Flat Top from Vietnam

Here's an interesting can (for a Carlings) with a good back story. The can on the left with the missing lid is a flat top while the can on the right is a comparable pull tab of the same design. Both are from Tacoma, Washington. In addition to the lids, the tab has a line of text up the side. The flat top has the same text line but next to the seam.

The can with the missing lid was drank by a Navy sailor off the coast of Vietnam. He cut the lid out and kept stuff in it before eventually bringing it home. That's what he told me anyhow when I got the can from him last week. I asked him if it was a pull tab or you needed to open it with a church key and he said the latter. The steel rims and remnants of the lid support this. You can also see where at least one punch is folded down against the can. It's possible this is how he took the top off but based on the lid material and testimony of the person who drank it, I'm going with flat top.

Does anybody else have any Vietnam era flat tops that returned to the states like this one?

@Scott That Black Label has been added to the USBC Vol 1 Supplemental. You'd be amazed at how much has been added. The good word should always go out to the amazing effort the BCCA Product Development team is doing to get cans added. If you see any of them at a show, please make sure to thank them for their effort....Product Development - Bruce Gregg #248, Jim Wolf #16033, John Page #24671, Tom Waggoner #17977, Mike Newton #30934, Tom Hoffman #27960, Jerry Cole #953, Jeff Galloway #15987 and Ron Gregg

All the beer I drank in 1967-68 were flat tops. Black Label always had rusted lids.

Well that was a quick response and cool to see confirmation that it is indeed a flat top. Thanks guys.

One infantryman I know got Hamm's in aluminum cans. He says half the country is built with the empties. No word on tab vs. flat though, will ask him that. He didn't bring any home, either, so no way to know which city.
Better to drive 950 miles and kick asz than go a thousand miles and get nothing.

]I have a picture of me with a Lucky Draft that was only a tab in the states. Can't tell what top it had because of flare.

I found it and cropped it, maybe some young eyes can tell
