Oertels Real Draft cans 99-4 & 99-5 (What's the real difference?)

#1

Post by JL Patterson » Fri Nov 30, 2018 2:17 pm

Hello all,

I tried searching the forum for the answer to this but couldn't find anything.
In the USBC book, it says the Oertels Real Draft can 99-4 is "dark bubbles" and 99-5 is "light bubbles", but I really can't tell the difference looking at their photos. They look the same to me.

What should I be looking for to identify the distinguishing characteristics?

Thanks,
Jim

I don't know about the bubbles, but 99-4 shows in the book as only a zip top, and 99-5 as a tab, the lids look to be different colors as well.

I assume these are the bubbles they're referring to. There does appear to be some difference but nothing that makes it real easy. The left lid could be gold color as well as only a Zip Top while the right one looks silver and is listed only as a Tab Top.

Thanks guys, your responses help a bunch. I totally overlooked the zip- versus tab-top notations. That image also helps with dark vs light bubbles.
Appreciate it!

Strikes me that this could be the beginning of a great thread -- there are any number of very obscure distinctions between cans in the USBC. Sometimes you can ask around and get an answer. But there are plenty that just stump me.

It would be easy enough to make up a sort of supplemental table for book users that would list the identical twins and collect answers as to what stands between them.

This is a great idea. I would love some sort of supplement that clearly identified differences between otherwise identical cans in the USBC book.

Jim Wolf is working this hard in the tab section of the USBC online update. Fixing errors, taking more pictures, and updating the wording. This is a long term project, however.

I'll third the idea of a place on the RB site where the answers to "What's the difference?" can be consolidated and/or organized. A lot of times these questions get answered but then the answers are lost when the original post gets old. I have quite a few questions myself in this regard. I'd even volunteer to organize the answers into some sort of composite.

@idigrust
@eric
@JKW

I think @JKW, Jim Wolf, has a good many of the answers. He's already working double time on the USBC update. Like, I would hesitate to put anything else on his plate. But his take on this question would often be the authoritative one. May be true of the other authors of USBC I and II as well.

I talked to Jim a couple years ago at Spring Thaw about this question, and the impression I got was that a good many of those "What's the difference?" twins are a metallic vs. satin difference, or one that has to do with a change in can composition and paint type -- the design may be essentially the same, but different materials are being used.

Yeah, I'm with @eric -- I'd be happy to contribute some labor toward this too. But I think it's also important to ask Jim a) if this work already exists, and b) what would be the best way of going about seeking his input. No point in stepping on anyone's toes -- but this info, well compiled, would be of value to the BCCA as a note addendum to the USBCs.

Where should this new forum go? Reference? General Discussion? We can easily move older threads to the new forum, just find em and let me know.

Seems like a reference thread to me, but we also should bridge this to the BCCA and make sure they know they can come over and contribute to it (and look around the RB site). I think the input of the USBC guys -- however they are willing to offer it, and I'm not taking that as a given -- is key here.

I was sort of envisioning this to be somewhat like the composite lists, with a discussion thread and then a list somewhere where everything gets compiled. Maybe leave the discussion in "General Discussion" with a more general name, otherwise I am afraid it may die or not get enough feedback. Then have the list somewhere else?

I don't think we should put any more work on Jim or the others, if they want to chime in they are always welcome to. If we get it wrong it is not the end of the world, eventually someone will correct it. Many times it is just a matter of someone looking carefully at the original pictures in the book, or the new ones in the supplement, or the notes that are already in the USBC. Or a matter of someone that is familiar with both cans knowing what the difference is.

Wow I am an awesome moderator, got the first question answered in 8 minutes while I slept (thank you Mr. Page). Can I get an excel and web list thing like the Composite listings have? @idigrust
