Old Tap Ale Quart Find

A large cache of Old Tap Ale quarts was found a while ago in the Boston, MA area. 31 Old Taps were found along with some misc. flats and a couple of bottles. A few of the Old Taps and flats were sold but a large majority of them were given to friends and family of the original finder.

I was fortunate to be able to acquire 12 of the quarts.

Here are images of the original find and of the 12 I was able to obtain. A few of the 12 are spoken for but most of them will be available at the 20th anniversary show on June 18th. None sold before then.

WOW! Great find! I love seeing the entire lot uncleaned like that. Those calorie controlled ale's are good cans too. Looks like the Debbie's suffered some. Am I safe in assuming that they were out of some type of a dirt crawl space or something? Thanks for posting those cool photos!!!!! Wood

Great find! They looked to clean up quite a bit. What did you use to work on the quarts?
I have several Ortlieb Metallic gold quarts in very similar uncleaned condition and was hoping to improve them.

Looking at the original find picture, I notice that all the flats and bottles (can't really see the Ballys) are from the early to mid 1950s. So are the Old tap quarts the older IRTPs or perhaps an unlisted non-IRTP version? I know that rival Massachusetts brewers Croft and Dawson had non-IRTP quarts in the 1950s. Just curious, as I'm sure it would be mentioned if they were not IRTPs.

As far as I know everything in the picture was found together in the basement. I really don't know if it was in a crawl space or not, but based on condition I think that it is very likely they were.

Thanks John,

All the quarts were cleaned with Oxalic, they WD40. I was fortunate that the seller didn't try and clean these at all. They really did improve quite a bit.

Good eye on noticing the flats and bottles are non-IRTP. I thought the same thing when I first saw the picture. The quarts are all post war IRTP. So I can only assume that wherever these were stashed in the basement, the spot was used over a period of years.
