E&B ales and more from Michigan.

#1

Post by Jay » Thu May 24, 2018 1:17 am

Just finishing a trip to good old Michigan. Strictly lower peninsula. We managed to turf up some good cans. Geez it seems Michigan is full of rusty bunchers in spring. Here’s my take for the shelf. The bud is metallic finish. The e and b ales were found across from a cabin. The guy must have really liked ale because we found several different ale brands.

Thanks, I was completely surprised to see the ales come out of the acid. They were mystery cans.

The rest were Ballantine an frankenmuth ales. There were very few keepers of those.

You’re killing me Jay! The best Golden Bud I ever found (We Michiganders call them Golden Buds) was a mystery can as well (and that was back in the 70s).
Those are nice!

Nice work and keep at it!
"Still looking for 2 specific examples of the following cans I traded away years ago.
Berghoff LP cone: indoor with rusted seam and slight touchup on white stripe in upper right of label. Also a copper colored Drewrys "Taurus/Gemini" scene; indoor with yellow smoke damage and top lid half cut out.

Will trade a better examples, other cans or buy from you!

Chris, We found about 20 golden buds. About 12 were keepable. I couldn’t fit the rest in my suitcase. We stopped by Alanson just for old times sake. The township is in the process of cleaning it up. Almost all the cans on the surface are gone. Anything metal is pretty much gone. They left all the glass for some reason. They also pulled the dozed car parts out of the center and leveled some of it. There are three deer blinds in there now. It’s just a matter of time.

Weird. I don’t remember car parts in that dump. I was there last year and found plenty of cans-and not the bulldozed as you describe. Will be there in a few weeks and report back. Might be a good thing to doze as difficult to find cans in there.

Did you find cans ?

We found some cans. It actually helped by cleaning up all the junk cans that were laying everywhere. There was a car axle and some other stuff in that big dirt/concrete pile that were pulled out. There are a few fallen trees on the center two track, so you can’t drive all the way back in. My brother found a Royal bru cone in there. And I scored a really sweet old bohemian. Let me know how it goes when you get up there.

There’s tons of good buried cans there. I’m just glad someone finally told me about this dump and I was able to experience it twice (thanks again dad!) because I knew it was a matter of time years ago.

They actually parceled off the land back in 1982 and had a huge sign by the far right of the dump. The dump originally went all the way down to the road west of the dump... 3 houses stand there now. In 1983, my dad and I thought thought it would be gone the next year and I was off to college so we didn’t go back....until we got back into active collecting and dumping and returned in 1995 with Gary and Anne Bora. By then, the land parcel sign was gone and the dump was as it was before...more or less. Granted the “piles” of cans were far smaller than they were in the late 70s. Every year since 1995, constant churning has reduced the “piles” to shards or just reverted to the elements.
