I agree. I've never heard anyone 'fess up to knowing anything about that photo. Don't you think there's a good chance the can in the 1985 photo is the one Dave Stark claimed to have held in hand?
So we know that the photo was taken in 1985? How do we know that? Where was it published? Nobody will fess up? We could speculate as to why. Dave Stark said he held one? When did he say that?

My belief is that whomever has it would like its 'mystique' to continue, thinking it will hold more value this way.

I don't know when the photo dates to. Incorrect assumption. Looking at the BCCA website, the text accompanying the photo reads, "The first Krueger can as shown in The Brewer's News. This can surfaced briefly in 1985, but its whereabouts remain unknown." Link here: http://www.bcca.com/history/beer_can_history.asp

BCCA web article also states, "A photo of two Krueger Special cans appeared in the December 28, 1933 issue of Brewer's News, but no current example has been positively verified to exist."

Looking again at the BCCA article, the attribution is a little unclear - I had always assumed the color photo was taken in 1985. Also, Ed, you referred to the BCCA photo as "this photo from 1985 (on the BCCA site)" way back in March of 2005 when the Lilek photo was found to be doctored. You were not the only one referring to it as such. That discussion is where my assumptions about the date of the photo likely began.

Also, as to when Stark said he held the can, this is what I said earlier in this thread -

"On another note, pertaining to the existence of a Krueger's Special can: I was told by a highly respected collector that years ago Dave Stark told him he had held that can in his hands. Also said that it was held by a family that did not want to sell it. I'm assuming this was before ebay - I'm guessing in the 80s? There may have been no higher known selling price at the time than the 6k Tiger and Rosalie can to entice a sale. Anyway, this tidbit coupled with the one legitimate looking color photo showing a Special can that actually matches existing advertising depictions leads me to believe that at least one of these cans is out there, but has not made it into the hobby yet. The Stark anecdote also strikes me as a possible point of origin for some of the yarns I've heard spun over the years by less credible 'historians'."

I would guess that Stark relayed this story in the 1990s or early 2000s.

After I posted the above paragraph, I heard from another highly respected collector who reported being told the same story by Dave Stark in 2004.

I would imagine there are other collectors who heard the same thing, but probably have no desire to discuss it here.

I always thought 1985 on the photo too. Just didn't want to assume anything.

But, to read the text on the BCCA site, it implies that the photo was from "The Brewer's News" but no date, but the can 'surfaced briefly' in 1985 - ostensibly with no photos.

I thought it was a 1985 photo, but apparently not - the photo seems to be from an unknown date in the "Brewer's News."

The BCCA link also states the Krueger's Special test cans went out 14 months before the repeal of prohibition, also implying a near beer.

If it was Richmond, the can saver may have been disrupted by the Navy's increased presence there during WWII. Perhaps somebody who served in the war? If so, it might be someone who was relocated?

Anybody (over 21) receiving one in 1933, may have been alive in 1985. However, less likely today. So, we would be dealing with a family that knows less of the can. And more likely than not, moved away from Richmond.

For cans that stayed, attics of houses of the period, or even basements if they have them, might be the place.

Who knows? We may never know!

Congress passed legislation in March of 1933 to allow 3.2% alcohol production. The reported date of November 1933 for the Special cans would allow that, not just .5% (near bear).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cullen-Harrison_Act

This was before the passage of the 21st amendment repealing prohibition which was ratified by 36 states in December of 1933.

Tom, you are waaay smarter than me and that makes sense. It seems to disprove what the guy at Keglined.com said about it being near beer.

What's your thoughts on a Special ever surfacing?

While reading the April/May 2013 magazine from the BCCA today, I came across a brief article which brought me to this thread. Over five years have now passed since this presumed prototype was sold on ebay. What is the update? Did the buyer ever come forward with it? Did anyone save all the pictures from the ebay auction?

Does this mean you are the person who bought it or you have pictures saved from the auction? If you are the person that bought it, what have you learned about in the time since the auction?

NO, That doesn't answer my Question, American can co experimented with the beer can in 1931-32. once they felt they perfected the can they then searched for a Guinea Pig Brewery take the test a step further, that ended up being Krueger. What beer where they using before Krueger ever got involved? LEON.

It's the January, 1936 issue of Fortune. It turns up at shows on occasion. The link below is to a copy that sold on eBay a while back, and it includes lots of photos. The issue is obviously well worth having. I'm not sure if the sale price of this copy is more indicative of the current value or of Mr. Small's prowess as an eBay seller. I paid $20 for mine, but that was 20 - 25 years ago.

@Leon The American Canning Company could have easily been using the near beer that was sold through much of Prohibition. I always go back the theory on why the first can was called "Krueger Special". Even looks like the whole Krueger and Welsh Rarebit had been a thought long before it showed up on quart cans......There is also an earlier article that indicates as you indicated earlier that American Canning Company had been experimenting for years.....Funny thing though that National seemed to be the first to have openers on hand according to another article.....
