What is up with "UP"

Post by Pokey »

Who, when, where & why is the diminutive word "UP" associated with Lemon-Lime soda? It has been used by so many different companies over the years - most notably 7up - but who used it first and why?

Please post pictures of your cans that say "UP."

How about Mission? There are quite a few variations of Up..
Kirsch makes a Tee Up...very tough can!
Handi makes an Up Drink
Get Up...
Franks Sun Up
Cott Up...
Eskimo-Up from Clicquot cone top (quart and 12 oz)
Carousel Upswing
Can-A-Pop Lemon Lime Up
C & C Pick-up cone 12oz
Booths Set Up
Belfast Up B140-9
Topp Up
Staff Upswing
Shoprite Up-rite

These are all prezip code cans... Most are pretty tough - It would be a cool collection to try and assemble!
Best of luck,
Dave T

Not sure about the origin but I did just find this on the internet; not sure if it's true or not but:

Bubble Up began in 1919 as a lemon-lime carbonated soft drink. Originally owned by Sweet Valley Productions of Sandusky, Ohio, Bubble Up was produced ten years prior to its well-known competitor, 7-Up.

Up until I read this a few minutes ago I thought 7 Up was the first to use the term "UP".
Most wanted can finally found!

I would guess that it would be a simple connection to a pick up idea... Many of the early soda advertising connected drinks to improving your state of mind so to speak... Fizzy, sugary, etc. Coca Cola even seemed to allow the connection to Cocaine to exist for a short time, then they pointed that it didn't contain any, but the connection was already made!
That's my two cents...

Some 7-Up information wikipedia.

One popular myth is that its creator named the soft drink after seeing a cattle brand with the number 7 and the letter U.[1] Other theories suggest that the drink was formulated with seven flavors plus the bubbles from the drink's carbonation (the bubbles go up). Other ideas include the original bottle contained seven ounces; its creator came up with the name while playing dice; that it was the 7th large commercial lemonade brand that tasted the same. Another rumor has it that the name was created because the company had previously failed six times, hence the name "7 Up".[1] Before the formula change in 2006, a can of 7 Up included seven ingredients. The "Up" in the drink's name might refer to the original inclusion of lithium citrate, when it was marketed as a patent medicine to cure hangovers.

Some people mistakenly believe that the name 7 Up comes from the belief that its pH is 7.0 and therefore neutral. This is not the case at all: the pH of 7 Up is comparable to many other soft drinks. At a pH of 3.67,[2] Diet 7 Up is less acidic than lemon juice (pH 2.3), vinegar (pH 2.9) or wine (pH 3.5).[3]

According to Professor Donald Sadoway (MIT) the name is derived from the atomic mass of Lithium, 7, which was originally one of the key ingredients of the drink.
