Top ten Minnesota cans

The posting of top 10 Michigan cans was an interesting thread. It got me thinking (and as my boss recently said, "if they start wondering, the start wandering...")sooo...
Top ten Minnesota cans: I am far from knowing much about Minn. cans, having only lived here for several years. But, also collecting for many, many years, I have some ideas of what I DON"T see.
Totally random order, here are some cans I don't see that are from Minn.
1. Raspberry Kato cone
2. Red Wing cone
3. Jennings-either
4. Grain Belt ALE cone

Ok guys, start tearing the list up and adding others.

1. Gluek Stite Malt Lager
2. Kiewel's Cone Top
3. Grain Belt Ale
4. Olive Drab Schmidt City Club
5. Olive Drab Grain Belt
6. Arrowhead - Gold Arrow from Cold Spring Brewing
7. Fitgers Natural Strong FBIR
8. Falls Velvet Strong
9. Pink Kato LP
10. Schmidt Desert Scene

These are generally known as some of the tougher MN cans. There are others that merit inclusion, but I can't give away all of our secrets!! Plus, you guys may have them in your totes and not know it. Most of my great can finds come from the dollar boxes.

Leon, you see Kegle Brau's now & then, Although I still don't have one...I think the Hamms Olive Drab might make the list too.

I have to ask on the Minnesota cans how many of these do those collectors see:

16oz Grain Belt - "Big 16 oz." w/ red trim at top
16oz Grain Belt - "Big 16 oz." w/ black trim at top

I have an A1+ of the red trim with a very early ring pull top. Not sure I have ever seen another.

On the black trim, I saw one I know of years ago that was maybe grade 2 and did not pick it up thinking I'd find a nice one - but not seen one again since.

If any of you have the black one just lying around - let me know.

Here's mine, it's Red trim, early pull, I haven't seen a Black trim version. Maybe Gluek-Beer-Dave has one?

WHY is the powder blue Gluek's LP-cone not mentioned?? My opinion it's
the coolest looking MN. can ever made and yes better looking than the
Holy Grail Kiewell cone!

... ah, I give up.

P.S. I would really like to get some leads on the Schmidt's olive drab!

Kinda cool though. My brother always said it would be awesome if Grain Belt would have made a OI like the black cones..can you imagine??? That big gold OI panel on the side with the colored mini can in the panel...ouch!

I have a lead for you, but you won't like it. About 10 years ago, I was following up on a lead and wound up at a guy's house where I bought about 10 gallons. Good ones, and a good price. He brought out a couple of odd ball cans, but for some reason I wasn't interested. One was the Schmidt's Club OD. No top. He said he thought it was the only one. He's paid $600 and would sell it to me for that, too. I knew nothing about OD's other than that they are ugly, and passed.

I mentioned my find to another friend in town, who mentioned it to another. I believe he went over and cleaned up the really good stuff I'd left behind unknowingly. I called back about a year later and not much was left.

Damn...I hate stories like that. We all have one or two about passing up some thing good due to what we think is too high priced. Do you know the guy who picked it up? Were the guy from local?

I believe RB's Captain may know more about this one. I didn't know him at the time, but I seem to recall him being involved in the acquisition.

Captain, I think that's the one I uncovered. I sure blew it by not picking up more of what he had, but I'd spent about $1500 on gallons that day, and couldn't swallow more.

Who wound up going over to that Anoka home and picking up the rest. I don't remember what else was in there?

Cansnatcher: Here is the MN list again- I see Redwing on it now but only in the first list of 10? That seems strange to me a bit??

So guys, who have the top collections in the gopher state? I've seen Dave, Joe W. collection years ago, totally awesome, Cansnatcher, we've all seen it here or in person, a real eye catcher, tough labels all over the place and being a carpenter, a totally cool "mans room". Who else ?

Dont forget the Cold Spring PeP and that Cold Spring dark blue flat is pertty rare in 1/1+....Can you guys imagine what a Gain Belt quart woulda looked like...man....Hey Stejskal...how bout that lp Kato Super Bock Ale OD? Still got that? LOL!!!!!

But my collection doesn't hold a candle to Wendl's. Its the most amazing I've seen in person, but far. I'd be interested in knowing who else would be considered the top collections in MN. I don't know that many guys, so I can't say.

Andy,
A clean Super 16 will be $100+ and the Golden 16 is $60+. There are some off grade ones around and they still command $35 plus for either one. You just don't run into them very often.

Question on the Arrowhead - Gold Arrow from Cold Spring Brewing. Is the Flat or the Tab tougher? Who has one?

The Gold Arrowhead from Arrowhead Brewing Co of Cold Spring is around in an early tab, zip and flat top. There's probably even a u-tab, as Cold Spring used these for a short time, though, I've only seen them on actual Cold Spring Golden Beer cans. The real tough Arrowhead has the gold arrow, and is brewed by Cold Spring Brewing Co of Cold Spring, MN. I've never seen one in person and only know of the one reffered to in the "Beer Cans of Minnesota" book. I can't tell from the black and white photo if it's even a real gold Arrowhead from Cold Spring Brewing Co. The brewery info is just too small to tell. So, it may not even exist.

If your question is Gold arrow from Arrowhead Brewing Co, then the zip is the easiest, as most that I come across are zip tops.

What about the Gluek flat top with gold Gluek that has the black shield at top instead of the Blue/red one. Is that uncommon enough for consideration. Its in USBC.

Also, I have a normal Gluek Stite 12oz but Gluek is black not gray that doesn't seem to have ever made a book.

When I was a kid (late 1970s) there were 2 really nice collections in Winona, Minnesota. One was an old guy that had a basement full of great cans, lots of flats and cones. The other was my Grandma's mailman (first name Lee?) and he had a tremendous collection as well. Anybody know any more about those 2 collections???
