What is Dixie Dave going to do???
Gayle Benson, widow of Dixie Brewery owner Tom Benson (and the owner of the New Orleans Saints, New Orleans Pelicans and a car dealership empire) has stated that she intends to rename all of the products and the company to something else other than Dixie. I'm guessing the current climate and her professional athletes have forced her to make the change.
They just spent millions in building the new brewery in New Orleans that opened just before the pandemic. The reformulated beers they now produce are excellent, but the only reason I buy the beer is because Dixie is on of my favorite brands to collect and it has a 113 year tradition. If it becomes something else, it's just another microbrew and I am out. Too bad.
I really hate this.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
If they’re smart they’ll get the rights for Jax. The last Dixie beer I purchased I believe was brewed by Huber, and was pretty rough. And this from a guy that drank Rhinelander in the 80’s, and still manages to find Black Label locally. A guilty pleasure...

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
Last I heard this forum is for anything to do with breweriana, the breweriana industry history, news and related developments. This is relevant, sad and disturbing news that I and I’m sure many other RB’s were not aware of. This is not Google, Twitter or Facebook which suppresses news just because they disagree with It.

@Pbama @DURTBAGG @Wrestling Nut I think @Beamer Mike was a little concerned because of the dumpster fire this issue brought to the BCCA Facebook page. I had to throw the law down because some folks decided to just out right be racist and political. Everybody here is aware of the sensitivity and care this RB forum takes to make sure this forum is friendly to fellow hobbyists.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
I am not a user of Facebook, Twitter and all of the other social media sites so I was not aware this became an issue on the BCCA Facebook site. I found out about from one of my Texas Beer friends. I was surprised there was nothing posted here about it so I created a thread about it. I am sorry if others had already had enough of this.
As Dixie is one of the brands I collect, along with other New Orleans and Dallas - Fort Worth brands, I am totally bummed about this. All of the other brands I collect are defunct. Dixie is a brand that I can actually drink and obtain new tap knobs, shirts and tackers, directly from the brewery.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
First I've heard of it too. Seems like a knee-jerk reaction to cast off a 100+ year old brand name that you've worked very hard to resurrect the last few years. Why not see how everything unfolds over the next couple of years instead of unilaterally deciding to end the brand now.
They sell Dixie locally here in Alabama. I've bought it a few times strictly based upon my fondness of the brand through beer can collecting. Like what was mentioned before, my loyalty was to the Dixie brand, not the current brewery or it's owners. Too bad.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
As anyone who knows me would suspect, I am profoundly disappointed and disgusted by this sad turn of events.
Do you know where the name Dixie actually comes from? There were banks in New Orleans that produced 10 dollar bills that said "dix" on them, French for 10. Lot of people around here and down in the bayou spoke French. There was no national currency at this time. The bills became known as "Dixies" because of that big Dix on them. New Orleans and South Louisiana became known as "Dixieland" because of those bills. The name over time spread to other parts of the South, which may be where misconceptions about the name originated. There is nothing remotely political, racist, or anything else negative in this name.
The origin of the name was recounted to the local chapter back in the day by Lew Burritt, who was the one guy here who chose to go all-in on Dixie since we had several Jax authorities and a couple that also knew Regal pretty well. He put in countless hours of research to learn everything about Dixie that he could find, talking to a lot of the old workers from there and learning about the cans, bottles, and history and production of various advertising pieces related to the brewery. I think he wrote the story one time in one of our chapter newsletters back in the day. I'll have to look to see.
So the question is asked: What will I do? As long as the brewery is named Dixie, I will continue to buy and enjoy its products. When the name change occurs, I am done. There are other breweries here I can support.
And my name here doesn't change. It reflects my heritage and one of my main collection interests.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
I have a related question: has any other brewery changed the name of its flagship beer and the brewery in the post- prohibition era, and if so, were they successful afterwards?

It might be like a New Coke thing. Talk about changing the name......get some bad feedback and then change their minds. Get a lot of publicity for the brewer. End up looking good. Just a demented thought.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
Dixie Dave - well said and I'm glad your not changing your user name.
To answer you question, I can't think of a major brewer that has completely scrapped their brand (not due to a sale or buyout), let alone scrapped their brand and survived.
Heck, I think the move from Dixie 45 to Dixie may be about as extreme a change as there was out there

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
I also have tried to think of an answer to Dixie Dave's question, and the closest I can come up with are examples not even close:
1. Playmate ML/beer
2. Amana
3. Dubois Budweiser
All three of which were halted due to court actions (I believe). Non were flagship brands that I am aware of.
Also, didn't Lemp beer become Falstaff? But that may have been pre-pro action.....and I am not 100% sure of this statement anyway. Brighter, more knowledgeable minds may chime in to correct me. IF I am correct, that may be the closest example?

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
I just assumed Dixie referred to the south because of the Mason-Dixon line. Being south of Jeremiah Dixon's line meant that you were from Dixieland. Who knew the French had anything to do with it?

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
Drank Dixie Beer for the first time when visiting New Orleans in 1974. Liked it, but also had the Wisconsin version a few years ago, which was nothing to write home about.
I was surprised to find Dixie, brewed in New Orleans at Whole foods in Portland Maine last month. Found it enjoyable but doubt if they will still have or carry it. Sad way to end a traditional brand.

Amazing, just jaw-dropping, that anyone, in 2020, would seriously advance the argument that "There is nothing remotely political, racist, or anything else negative in this name."
Sure, if you ignore 160 years of history :eyeroll:
Words change. Sometimes, the connotation, if not the denotation, comes to symbolize something different.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
The Wisconsin version was nothing special because they used metal vats, not the old cypress vats that the original Dixie brewery on Tulane used. They did the best they could using what they had, but it just wasn't the same. When production was moved to Memphis after Tom Benson bought a large share of the brewery, they began using the original 1907 recipe, and I believe there were cypress chips in the vats. It's not the same as the old vats, but it sure tastes a lot closer to the real thing. To my knowledge, they use cypress chips in the vats here. Tours are supposed to reopen soon, and if they do, I'm finding out for myself, because I do want to tour the new brewery. As I've said before, it's a beautiful facility. Maybe the NICEST brewery that I have been in.oldindiapaleale wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 8:41 pm Drank Dixie Beer for the first time when visiting New Orleans in 1974. Now I am REALLY Interested in this post. You found Dixie, brewed in New Orleans, in Portland, Maine? This is from New Orleans, not Memphis? From what I've heard, they are reestablishing themselves across the South. I know they're in Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. I believe they recently arrived in Florida, if I recall the news on their Facebook page correctly. I'd love to know how it got to Maine, because the brewery does not name anywhere within 100 miles of Portland where they are selling their beer. I know that Dixie could be found nationally before Katrina, but I haven't seen it far from home since then.
I can't see the date on the bottom of the can, what is it? I have 16 ounce Dixies that were brewed here, wonder if they were all canned as part of the same batch. Seems like the 16's I've got at the house are all canned in March. You can find 16 ounce Dixie here at the brewery or at the Dome or the SK Center, but it is not very common in grocery stores, at least not the locations of the major local chains where I shop.

Here in the Dallas area, we get Dixie and Blackened Voodoo in bottles only. Total Wine says they carry Dixie Light, but I have never seen it there. I would like to be able to buy cans to drink out by he pool.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
I fear the decision to rename this beer will be the death knell for the brewery. The folks they are catering to have likely never even had a Dixie beer. The cowardly choice of the owner of this particular beer has made sure I will look elsewhere when I buy beer. I didn’t realize it was offensive to be from the south. If this has to do with a connotation of slavery, that makes no sense, since they had slaves in the north and the east also. The sins of past generations have nothing to do with today. Racism is not just a regional disease nor is it just a white disease.
I remember the old days when you saw something you didn’t agree with you just looked away, changed the channel or simply didn’t buy it. What a novel idea. I wonder when they’ll change the name of the starchy, crispy item that I break up to put in my soup? I find its common name offensive to my Caucasian heritage. Just kidding. I’m an adult and if I like something, I buy it regardless of what it’s called. Heck, I'd even drink a Black Label if I could find it.

Re: What is Dixie Dave going to do???
This decision may not be the death knell for the Dixie Brewery, but it will sure be a huge blow to its recent success. Quite a few people have responded on their Facebook page vowing to never buy the beer again, mostly after the name change. We have lost most of the stores and businesses that made New Orleans different from most cities, and people in this area are very loyal to the few that we have left. Check out "ain't dere no more" on Facebook, a page dedicated to remembering some of the many local institutions we have lost. Many locals feel betrayed, like we're losing one of the last things that made New Orleans special- a place unlike other cities. It's a hard thing to really explain to people who aren't from around here.
Dixie has been a lot more high-profile in southeast Louisiana since the Bensons bought a controlling interest in it. Look at Saints games from the Dome: there is a big sign for Dixie next to the scoreboard. There are ads for Dixie and a couple of bars that feature it both in the Superdome and the Smoothie King Center. Many local restaurants and bars now serve it. Before the storm, it was hard to find outside of a small portion of a shelf on the beer aisle in larger stores. Dixie is selling well from what I see in my stores. It's been well marketed as the local icon it is and an excellent complement to local foods, especially seafood. Yet Dixie has a curse on it. Every time Dixie starts doing well, something happens to knock them a couple of pegs. I just hope they get enough negative feedback that they grow a backbone and some cojones and leave the name alone.

Funny you should mention that.kruegerbock wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 12:59 pm Silver lining - you ought to be able to pick up signs and such very inexpensively.
There has actually been a run on signs and shirts and stuff at the brewery by people who want something with the brewery name on it while they can still get it easily. I was there Sunday and picked up a couple of smaller things, including a really cool tin tacker that is the brewery's iconic tower.
