South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
I happened across this article and thought to share. South Carolina was infamous for 14oz cans. Schlitz, Black Label. Colt 45 and Old Milwaukee I believe were some of the more noted ones known to be found from the state with tax stamps on them. The date on the newspaper is The_Charlotte_Observer_Fri__Apr_5__1968. It states that four years prior, breweries began to send 14oz to SC for tax reasons.
I'm hoping to do a little more homework on the introduction of 14oz into South Carolina.

Re: South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
I'm glad you asked.
The 2 tabs that say "Fluid 14 Ounces" in white across the top do not have SC tax stamps. The other 11 are SC Tax paid cans. There are 3 different SC lids shown.

Re: South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
I had been collecting cans about six or seven months, and I was riding somewhere with my Dad. At a busy intersection, I saw a Schlitz 14 ounce laying in the grass near our car. Light was going to be red for a couple of minutes, so I talked my Dad into letting me run out and grab the can. It was about half full so I have all these people watching while I picked up the can and dumped it out, returning triumphantly to the car with my prize right as the light turned green.

Re: South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
Schlitz was a unusual brewer who never could decide what they wanted to do. When Longview opened in 1966, they supplied the majority of weird sizes to the South including 10, 11 and 14. But, when Winston-Salem opened in 1970, and Memphis in 1971, the 10 and 14 production moved to those locations.
However, in the 80's, you could find the 10oz cans (both Schlitz and Strohs brands) coming from Longview again.
Another thing I could not understand is that all of the Schlitz 10oz cans marked for Puerto Rico came from Memphis. It would seem that their brewery in Tampa would make much more sense, as it is hundreds of miles closer and a large port is in the same town.

Re: South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
On a personal note I was stationed at Ft Gordon Ga in 1983 (not far from S carolina) and even then there were 14oz Busch cans being sold on post for the same price as a 12oz can. Since there were two other big army bases in GA (Stewart and Benning) I imagine lots of 14s were sold in that state even into the early 80s.

Re: South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
I don't recall ever seeing 14 oz cans on store shelves in Georgia. On the other hand my county was dry and South Carolina was only about 5 miles to the east so you did see them being consumed a lot. I remember crossing the the Highway 123 to go "The Rio" with my grandfather on one of our "fishing" trips. He would sit me on the bar stool next to him and drink 14 oz Black Label tabs but he would always flip them over and open them with a church key.
Most of the counties on the Georgia side of the border were dry between Rabun County and Augusta so I imagine that any 7s or 14s were imported from across the state line.

Re: South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
Must have been only on the Army bases in Georgia then. I'll have to look but i think i have a couple that say military use only which would also be tax exempt.Kevin the Ex-Editor wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 7:40 pm I don't recall ever seeing 14 oz cans on store shelves in Georgia. Re: South Carolina and 14oz beer in cans
Dave Wheaton has done a ton of work compiling a listing of 14oz cans. they weren't sold just in the south. He told me they were sold in some states up north to include penn, delaware and maine. I am waiting on a flash drive of his composite which is extensive. He has pics of all the 14s except the Draft by National which he was unable to locate.
