Re: Zodys
Here is a closed auction for $489 but it does not specify whether or not it is rolled.

Another for $850 but that may not have been the final selling price.

Re: Zodys
Good luck getting it John. That is a super tough can and the price has really soared in recent years. They don't become available very often so do your best to close the deal if it's something you want. Otherwise you may have a long wait for the next chance.

Re: Zodys
Zody's is an awesome can. I was never able to find one for what I considered a reasonable price back when I was actively seeking tabs.
From what I remember from a BCCA News Report article, Zody's was only produced for one run by Maier in the late 60's, and was only available by the case.
From Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt:
Zody's was a chain of discount retail stores that operated in the United States from 1960 to 1986. The chain operated locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Michigan.
The first store in this Southern California-based discount chain was opened June 13, 1960 in Garden Grove, California by Heartfield Sores Inc., which also operated dozens of Hartfield's department stores. From 1962 the parent company changed its name to Hartfield-Zody's. By 1969 there were 19 stores. In 1972, Hartfield-Zody's acquired the Yankee Stores chain of Flint, Michigan, briefly rebranding the stores as Yankee-Zodys, and later as Zody's. The Michigan stores were unprofitable, and we're sold in 1974 when Hartfield-Zody's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. A brief period of prosperity brought expansions into Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. In 1979 there were 37 stores.
Bankrupt again by the early 1980's, the parent company, now known as HTT Industries, began closing stores in 1984. The remaining Zody's stores in California were shuttered in March, 1986, with many locations being sold to Federated Stores, the parent company of Ralph's supermarket chain, while other locations were purchased by HomeClub, a home improvement store chain.

Re: Zodys
I have seen four Zodys for sale over the past few years, but each one the price higher than the previous! Agree with Scott, if you find one you really want, jump at it since seems to be a can with some demand, and I still don't have one...

Re: Zodys
This discussion about the Zody's got me thinking that I may want to get mine done properly. It's a rolled can that came from Dan Andrews' collection and has flat top lids applied. Give what these are going for, it might be money well spent to have proper lids on it should I ever decide to sell. These are the photos from the Steel Canvas link above.
Does this look like a legitimate unrolled can with the proper lids? Maier was not picky about things, so it would not be uncommon to have different colored lids.

Re: Zodys
I say the newspaper ad was 1968 so that is prime fan tab era I would say top lid is correct since tabs were filled from bottom. I am unsure on bottom lid so it's anyone's quess does look odd by seam the bottom lid does.

Re: Zodys
I would say the going rate for a really nice bottom opened one is about $600. I have seen many of them available over the years so I believe it is an overrated can. Many people like it as it is one of the better "Z" cans available.

Re: Zodys
I also think it garners extra attention for being the last can available wrt alphabetical order. I'm sure there are a plethora of craft cans which would be after Zody's alphabetically, but most people don't collect anything that is not straight steel these days.

Since I was never able to get a Zody's, this can was last in my old alphabetical display.

Re: Zodys
Scott - I have never questioned the authenticity of my Zodys - and as you said Maier as well as other breweries - Walters in Pueblo that I collect another example - used whatever lids they had.
I only have 6 Maier fan tabs in my collection - 4 of them have the same bottom yellow-gold lid as yours - including my Zodys - you know west coast cans far better than me as Zodys is only 12oz fantab I have - but my other 3 with this bottom are clearly not rolled cans. So my vote - legit - but I'm no expert on identifying rolled cans.
