Good catch, I’ll add it when I have some time to update the list.

Interestingly, there’s been no conversation about a few of the 50’s flats like Ranch, Better Foods. Etc. I literally have never seen an example of either in any condition except the book. I add cones at some point but we can refine this list for a really long time as we all know the rarest cans may or may not have been priced correctly that long ago...

I'm better with the older cans, but I do have a little to share on some of the 1950's CA cans you listed.

I saw an offgrade Ranch Beer shortly after returning to the hobby in the late 1980's. I met Wayne Stober at the first show I went to. He lived half a mile from me, and invited me over to see his collection. I wasn't very knowledgeable at all, and I only remember the Ranch Beer because Wayne called attention to it. I remember it as a pretty good offgrade can despite not recalling specific details of the condition. The Lewandowski collection included a decent outdoor can.

The Lewandowski collection also included what appeared to be indoor offgrade examples of the Hollywood Ranch and Better Foods

The same Michigan collection I mentioned above included ongrade examples of the Better Foods and Glacier last time I was there. Several collectors have been able to acquire cans from this collection over the past decade or so, and I don't know exactly what has moved. I do know that the Glacier is gone and has sold at least twice more since it left. I first met this gentleman shortly after returning to the hobby also. I commented "nice can" on a can he was looking at at a show, and he replied that it wasn't clean enough for him. I asked, "So, you collect grade 1 or better then?". He replied, rather forcefully, "No, I collect mint cans".

Here's Better Foods that's in Michigan.

The owner also brought up that the India by Hornung (85/12) isn't on you list and he has the one in the USBC.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

The India is an incredible can. He had the 73-29 Goldenrod Beer mug too, I haven’t seen another example of either one.

I remember seeing an off-grade Ranch at a show in Michigan, probably in the early 90's, as I recall a little better than the one Scott posted. May very well have been Wayne's. I never went over a dollar for a can at that time, and I think it had $20 on it so I passed. I'm sure someone in Michigan got it, maybe Leon.

I've got a Lucky Bankers Ale 93-2 in pretty clean indoor condition. Some moisture spotting on it as you can see. The only other one I've ever seen personally was at the Canvention a few years ago- Dan Morean had one in similar condition with a price tag of $6,000. Then there is the one pictured in the book that appears to be grade 1. Those are the only three I'm aware of.

Thanks for posting this. I only have photos of the Lewandowski totes numbered 4, 5 and 6 for some reason. This would have been #1. I'd love to get #2 and #3 if you have them.

The two Brau Haus cans and Schultz are the same cans I posted above, and the Arrow English Style Ale is the same can Dan B posted in the discussion about cans not known ongrade. The cans that look wildly out of place in the tote are all Withdrawn Free.

Nice! The only one I've seen besides the USBC can is a touched-up dumper CMD picked up at Blue/Grey years ago. The similarity of the colors of the label and the band around it is odd enough that I thought the book can might be faded, but apparently not.

GENTS, I am updating the original thread in RED as new intel is shared. I will endeavor to keep it up to date so it can become a good resource, but may not update it on each new piece information. I’m happy to keep working on it from time to time.

Plusonegolfer wrote: Sun Dec 29, 2019 5:33 pm I made a list of the $1000+ flat tops in the original book. I am always curious which cans are rarer than others, and its not always easy to discern. Some labels are seen often but never in high grade (think Steinbrau etc), others are virtually never seen at all in any grade (think Triangle). Some cans are thought to be unique but fortunately the only one known is in great condition; some unique cans are well off-grade. The purpose of this thread is to learn more about what is really out there and to help me and others better understand how many of certain labels exist. Here’s the list with my initial comments of what I know. Have fun...

28-7 ABC Ale - seen maybe two, neither as good as the book.
29-35 Alpen Glow Ale - seen two or three of these, never in good condition
31-32 A-1 Ale - seen plenty of these and owned a good one awhile back
31-40 Arrow Ale - seen less than a handful, never better than the can pictured
32-1 Arrow Ale - seen two, one is pictured, the other not as good
32-17 Atlas Yorkshire Ale - seen two or three, all grade 2+ or lower
32-(32-31) Autocrat - seen a few dumper but never a good one of either label
32-(33-35) Badger - own one in 1-1+, and have seen many - rare in perfect shape
35-(17-19). Bay State Beer - own 17 near perfect, never seen other except in bad shape YELLOW BEERS ARE PLENTIFUL WITH A HANDFUL COMPLETELY ON GRADE AND MANY OTHERS IN GOOD SHAPE. THE SILVER BEER IS ELUSIVE AND MAY NOT BE KNOWN ON GRADE
35-22 B&B Beer - have never seen this can in any condition except in book
36-33 Better Foods - have never seen this can in any condition except in book ONE OR TWO ON GRADE, POSSIBLY OTHERS IN LESSER CONDIION
37-(15-18). Black Dallas - seen plenty of each, but rarely in great condition. Don’t know enough about the variance to determine rarity
39-34 Blue & Gold - only seen once in dumper condition

41-11 Brau Haus Ale - only seen one and it was off-grade

I made a list of the $1000+ flat tops in the original book.

143-34 Viking Draft - I have seen two of three on grade, but never a dumper - interesting?6-8 OF THESE ARE KNOWN, WITH SOME DUMPERS AND SOME ON GRADE - RARE CAN FOR SURE
144-1 Waldorf Samson Ale - seen a few dumpers and a handful on grade. Not as rare as originally thought. NOW AWARE OF AT LEAST 6-10 OF THESE ON GRADE
144-10 Waldorf golden Bock - never seen an example of this can. MAY BE A DUMPER OR TWO, BUT ONLY ONE ON GRADE KNOWN
144-38 Wehle Beer - seen only a few examples, but several were in good shape.
145-(14-16) White Horse - the black can from Toledo, OH I have never seen in any condition. Have seen plenty of the Chicago cans in a wide variety of condition. Few are near perfect ONE NICE BUT A BIT OFF GRADE CAN KNOWN, ONE ROLLED CAN THAT MAY BE A SHORT SHEET WHICH IS PICTURED IN THE BOOK -EXTREMELY RARE CAN
147-14. Zest - seen one dumper example, and the one in the book

Marc,
These are the Bay State Beer cans I still have, the two cans on the left are in my collection, not quite dumpers. I am working on more information on this topic as well as others in this line of topic of rare cans. I will see if I can get pictures when I can to go along with the information.

While not A1+, those two cans on the left are clearly on-grade. Look to be pretty clean with only minimal marks...

Here are a few more cans on your list, and these are minty. As far as grading goes it is so discretionary, ones persons one is a one plus while another's two plus is a one, but there is no margin here. Those Bay States are so close in condition that if you didn't look at it for six months you would forget which and why one is better. The second on the right with the plumed pipe is just slightly less then your auction can, but you would have to hold them both to tell the difference. The can on the far right with the full pipe I consider to be the best example of the Bay State Beer yellow. Although it does have the small scratch right of the seem, It is a full pipe with exceptional colors, flawless paint, and nice lids. Overall a spectacular can.
Just for fun, some insight on your can. First note the heavy dent on the top rim, easily removed, but this tells us it was dropped full. Then we look at the dark black just above the bottom rim, most likely from an aged full can. Now look ay the opener punches. Interesting, but not an opener from 1936/37. Having held the can many times over Dan's I studied it thoroughly last year at Dan's before his show . I just love the life and history of a can.

Keith,

I remember the two on the right particularly well, as you had them last time I saw you. I don't play in that end of the pool often, and did not allow myself to consider doing so at that time because of Gene's cones, but I was certainly impressed. I wondered at the time, and still do, if you had sold them and then re-acquired them. They're too good to go unsold for three years.

For the record, the Krueger Bock you showed is the one ongrade non-IRTP can I noted earlier in the discussion.

It must have been on the RB in 2007 someone posted the Lew. Bros. price list.... They included how many of a can they thought existed to go with those beautiful tote Pictures..... Its 12 pages when I blew it up to 12 font... is it ok to repost that? Hold on, I gotta go but a lotto ticket right now though..... you know, just in case some in this thread turn up in St LouisLouis.... sigh.... Andy
