FEHR'S CUP/MUG

#1

Post by Leon »

Seen this on ebay, buyer sez no surprises, bid with confidence & then sez no refunds or returns. BUT, Fails to mention it was once a cup/mug with added new top. typical with these cans. Buyer Beware. :smt017 :smt021

These are almost always from that mug find when you see them on ebay, I asked about one once and was told it was all original and if I am not sure I should not bid, I didn't bid. In Morean's latest auction he said nearly all examples are from mugs, are the actual cans really that rare? Also, is there a yellow version? I swear I have seen some yellow ones on ebay.

As far as know all Original versions are tough to come by. I remember picking up 2 Original cans once about 15+ years ago. I sold one to Marc Tracy if I remember right & if I remember right we both said we rarely see them as original non converted cups. LEON.

I was curious so I asked the owner. Here is what he said.

"I purchased it as an 'all original' can however I can't tell conclusively either way."
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio
* SummerSwap, July 21 & 22, Frankenmuth Michigan

Funny that the seller says

"I purchased it as an 'all original' can however I can't tell conclusively either way."

The 1/4” totally shiny area at top and bottom of seam should tell anyone conclusively that this was a mug :smt017

Right, they were found under a house in Indiana if I recall correctly. I've paid close attention since 1997, and I've seen fewer than ten all-original cans in grade 1- or better. Dumpers aren't seen often either.

There was a time when I questioned whether this can was actually made as a J-Spout and held beer (vs. mug conversion). Eventually, I came across the example below and was convinced real cans are out there. I have examined the seam, inside and out, with a a flashlight and magnifying glass. I'm convinced there has been zero repair/modification work done to this can.

Guy I got if from lives/lived on the Indiana/Kentucky border and heavily collected cans from that area. He sent me some pix (have them somewhere) of original examples he dumped. Rough condition, but more verification.
