Just got back from 3 days in Central Idaho
Last year I was making plans on attending the Tahoe show and do a bit of digging with the guys. I have to plan my vacation way out and was fortunate to get the week off before the show. When Ed had to change the date at the last minute I was stuck with no way to get off. So what do you do? You make lemonade with the lemons you have. I still had the original week off, so I would just plan a trip on my own and get out for a few days. My wife wanted to tag along so it wouldn't be a complete beer can digging trip. I strategically picked a camp ground from my 1941 central Idaho map that looked like it had some potential for cans. When we got there, it looked perfect. We stayed there for 3 days and I dug every day. It wasn't the mother load but it did produce some pretty nice cans. Most of the cans came from the one big pit, but I did dig prewar in three separate spots.
Here's what it looks like where cans have been buried for almost 80 years. I don't usually take pics of the spot before I dig but I just had a feeling good stuff lay below.
The very first shovel and I saw this!
It wasn't long until I started getting some real good color.
This is the last pile of 4 bags I hauled out of there.
Finally got it all.
Did all the pre cleaning in the creek. The Brown Derby's are dated Dec. 22nd, 1940. Some of these are going to soak out really nice. I believe the mystery LP's are Schlitz Lager, and the other 2 flats are a Hop Gold OI and a silver Brown Derby OI. I actually need the Schlitz bulb top cones. Just a variation that has eluded me until now. Nothing steller, but what a blast to dig prewar cans.
Life is good!

Good dig Jim! That Golden Eagle oil is awesome.

Nice finds - the oil can with the airplane on it looks very nice as well. Always liked to looks of that Golden Glow can too.....
Some of these are sure to look great after the acid bath.

Re: Just got back from 3 days in Central Idaho
No, they are not. The Brown Derbys ware dated Dec 22, 1940, so I assume the pit was used in the spring of 1941. The pit had lots of Brown Derby and Golden Glow but only 1 Miller, 1 Hop Gold (I think this may have been a clean up can) and 1 Bohemian Club LP. Definitely used by more than one group of campers. Condition was amazing, there was only 6 beer cans in the pit that weren't keepers.
I shall leave no cone unturned!!

Re: Just got back from 3 days in Central Idaho
Finally got these cans cleaned up. I'm really pleased with how they came out.
Everyone like before and after pics, so here are the best four.
Turns out the Golden Glow I thought would be best before cleaning has arguably the 3rd best face, but I used the same can for the before and after pics.

Here's the big picture of most everything I kept. I thought the Schlitz bulbs were a variation that I needed. It wasn't so the search continues. The Oil cans are pretty cool as the Vico is from Utah and the Golden Eagle is from Idaho.
