State & City Tax Stamps

#1

Post by OhioCanGuy »

Thought this would be an appropriate post for today, April 15th. Tax Day.

Picked up the can below a while back. State of Georgia tax stamp top lid at $.04. Makes sense for the can to have spent some time in Georgia as Red Top was known to distribute in the South, back in the day.

Also on this can, is a paper City of Marietta, GA tax stamp for $.03. Looks authentic to me, but guess I don't know for sure.

Questions are:
1. Did both the State and City tax this beer?
2. Was that common to get taxed by both?
2. If yes to number one, was the $.07 for a six pack? Seems like a lot for a single can.

I know those stamps are legit. I found a large dump of black labels in northern Georgia that all had White county GA. Tax stickers on them just like that one. They are also 3 cents. No mention of a city, just a county. I guess the state and the city or county would charge additional taxes.

Bob,.
I've seen many of those Twenty Grand cans with those paper tax stamps over the years, and have had several myself.

Paper tax stamps were very common in Georgia both county and city.

There are quite a few different tax stamps from Georgia. Stamp collectors seek them like postal stamps. In most cases either the county or the city would tax the alcohol. I don't think I've ever seen a can with both stamps. Many have the Georgia state tax imprint and a local stamp too.

Here is a Carling Malt Liquor 16 oz. can with a City of Nashville 3 cent tax stamp on the lid. NFS. Yes, there is a Nashville, GA.
