I do not have this one. I will need to watch for it at shows this summer. It's not much to look at but it's a Michigan flat so I have to have it.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio

I think I’ve only seen one true dumper and the others are indoor, indoor offgrade or really nice what could be described as nice can in a can outdoor cans.
"Although the cans will be of no value after opened, their cost is expected to be small..." Iowa: June 22, 1935

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

I looked on Newspapers.com and found several ads in Muncie, Indiana from May of 1962.

I picked up one about two years ago, out in my barn right now but checklisted as a "grade 3". I can go dig it out and take a photo if anyone's interested (might be a couple days, looks like a busy week at work).

That brings up another question. I wonder if it was “exported” to other states and not sold in MI? Because that ad that @pinnacle-project posted makes me think so.

The bland design gets extra demerits for being forced on them by Schmidt- or is it the other way around?

Probably the other way around. Pfeiffer Brewing Co snatched up a lot of small Midwestern breweries in the early 60s, thereby creating the Associated Brewing Company roster. A flurry of familiar brand names started appearing (or re-appearing) from seemingly mix-and-match locales, like E&B from South Bend and Drewry's from Detroit. Included in the acquisitions was Minnesota's Jacob Schmidt Brewing Co. which is obviously the most commonly encountered brand name on this tragically ugly label design. Whatever business wisdom drove the cross-pollination to Pfeiffer Extra Special is probably lost to the ages, but the bottom line is that Associated did a lot of weird stuff in a comparatively short time frame. They vigorously bled capital in the process and effectively killed the parent brewery, which had once been a contender for the title of Michigan's largest.

Epilogue: Stroh's watched from across town and chuckled quietly as Associated...well, dissociated. Guess who came out on top after that dust settled?

Yuk! That is not worthy of being on your shelves. You need to send it someplace where it will feel at home with other rusty cans - like my house.

Hard to fathom how Schmidt and Pfeiffer both go from making incredible scenic set cans... and some mouth breather in a suit at a meeting one day says "sorry boys, we're going with something new, something nice..... something "Extra Special" now"...... Pretty sure that's how it went....

Here is another very interesting Michigan beer can discussion I thought I would bump up.
Flying up to the Charlevoix area tomorrow and will try and attend the show in Frankenmuth, would like to pick up a clean Pfeiffer Special if anyone has one available.
They don’t seem to show up that often.

Yes, definitely a tough Michigan can. I got mine from somebody on this site. Kurt maybe? @kamsquared I do not recall for sure. It would not surprise me if the Good Guys have one at Frankenmuth. Just to be safe, you may want to contact them directly before the show. I have seen clean ones in their totes before but not all the time.
