Side Collection Has Grown

#1

Post by MI-Cans »

Having added some small cans since December, I took time to make adjustments to my makeshift camera box and re-took images of the smalls for a more uniform look. Again, nothing earth-shattering, but keeps interest up when unable to look for 12oz'ers. Helps to keep the fun in the Hobby!

Removed "Silly" from title as suggested in latter posts. Now considered a legitimate collecting niche for me. 04-14-2019

I have that Coy in 12oz. It's my only aluminum can. Have had it since my dad bought it for me at a show in the 70s. I didn't appreciate it until later in life and even more since his passing. Didn't even know the little one existed.😎

You are too kind. I would have told him he could not have the really great can until he renewed. :razz:

The 10 ounce Coy exists because the guy behind the brand was a local beer distributor named Neal Kaye, and he started Coy by putting Pearl Ale into his cans (contract brewed through Pearl). Coy was a big hit in the area and he started getting it distributed more regionally. Coy had a lot more full-bodied taste than most beers of its era, and people liked it. This is all before the craft brewers started up. The brand grew in popularity to where Coy decided to try going national with it- which is where the various "cask" cans came from. At this time, he bought the Dixie Brewery- in fact, he saved them from closing their doors! This is when the 10 ounce cans came out. Coy also tried branching out into other things- there was a Coy contract brewed in Canada, a light, and a malt liquor. Light is moderately tough, the Rhino Malt Liquor is rather tough to find. Anyway, Kaye had bitten off more than he could chew with the myriad of ongoing financial problems at the old Dixie Brewery. He sold the brewery, and I think he also lost his distributorship around this time. There are a couple of articles about Kaye from the 80's on Google if you search "Neal Kaye Coy Beer" Interesting stuff.

To draw this back into the thread, the Coy 10 ounce and the two Dixie 10 ounces (beer and light) were not marketed for very long, and are decent cans to find. If I have a couple of them at Canvention, I can usually find homes for them.

Are you seriously chasing the ten ounce cans or more the 7's and 8's? I have a lot of 80's 10 ounce cans, some 90's, some 70's, some rust, to trade or for sale or whatever if you're interested.

@sgramling
I actually have a reasonable offer on a Storzette but it has an incorrect lid. I want to check with Art for availability and cost involved to correct it. The person making the offer is gracious enough to hold them for me until I’m ready to pull the trigger on something in his offer.

@Dixie Dave
I’m not focused on any given size. If it’s a brand not displayed in my picture, I’d be interested. If it is a brand in my picture, is it noticeably different somehow? My niche is variety and that’s why there’s no real focus on size or brand.

Thanks for the pic. I thought that's what it was when I last saw one online.

@Leon
I have no objections to rust. Many of my older cans have that feature (making them more affordable to me). PM me with a list or picture of what you think you have available and how much you want for it. We'll work something out. Thanks.

Total small cans (7oz, 8oz & 10oz) now up to 82 and each one is different.

@Baxter
A huge thanks to Baxter. I got my first small can(s) from him so I have to blame him for this quest. And I have to thank him for taking time out during his Spring Thaw visit to search for small cans for me. Thanks, Ray.

@Leon
If you enlarge the image, you'll see that there's rust. They're not all shiny or in mint condition. Waiting to see what you might have available.

At the Frankenmuth show, I was able to get another Coors 7oz can giving me a total 7 different Coors small cans. In addition, I was given two identical but different 8oz commemorative cans by @pinnacle-project They are the tough split Budweiser/Schlitz can given out to honor the two breweries in Tampa, Florida in 1979. I say identical but different because one has a bank top while the other is an unopened pull tab with Schlitz as part of the embossing on the lid. I take my pics at a slight angle. you might be able to see the difference when you enlarge the image.

A HUGE thank you to Bryan!

My side collection of small cans has a new total of 127 cans. Each one is different! Here's the updated image including the latest additions. It's fun having a minor collecting niche to occupy one's time when collecting for the primary focus slows down.

You take nice pictures. Is your background just a rolled up piece of paper with natural room lighting or do you have a fancy box to take pictures in?

@pinnacle-project
Bryan, I'm no expert with a camera. I set it on Automatic and Macro. I use a cardboard box that I loosely patterned after Randy K's traveling version. As you can see, it's far from what one might refer to as "fancy". (You might think it's fancy because of that shiny duct tape.) The original box had the camera directly in line with the can. I found that some cans, especially the metallic ones, would display a tall narrow black reflection of the camera (lens?). In this version, if you look at the opening for the camera, the bottom of the lens is at the height of the top of a 12oz can. The lightbulb holder is from one of those clamp on utility lights. I use a 60w LED daylight bulb at the angle you see in the picture. I purchased some oversized construction gray paper from Joann Fabrics and lined the area of the box where the can sits. I placed the back sheet in such a way that when it comes down to the bottom, it's curved so that it blends the color better. I penciled in a circle for a target for the can(s). Currently load and remove cans through opening in top. Will probably cut opening in side for easier access eventually.

I try to maintain consistency in taking and finishing the images. When I was helping Jim Wolf edit images for the Supplement, he gave me this guideline: "Make the height at 1.65 times the width. Picture manager resizing gives us a 620x1024 pixel size...". (I haven't gotten any pics from him lately so I guess I was fired from that effort.)
