I have a number of Regal items but these two are my favorites. The ski jumper is known as the Regal Bird and this is a large print about 36" long. The WWII fly girl has been cut down from a larger print but still looks nice. Originally the logo at the bottom was centered and she is holding a raised bottle of Regal.

There seems to be quite a bit of Regal stuff from Canada, so I thought I’d put a time line together for the brewery that would eventually became Regal Brewery Co. Ltd.

In 1873 David Kuntz opened a brewery at 19 Bay St in Hamilton Ont.
In 1879 that brewery was taken over and renamed H Kuntz Brewery by family member Henry Kuntz who operated it until his death in 1902. The tray with the Elk on it that Leon posted a picture of is from this period. The brewery operated under that name for another year or so.

In 1903 the Hamilton Brewing Association was formed to hold the assets of three struggling breweries in Hamilton, one brewery was closed the following year but the other two survived right through the 1930’s. Prohibition in Canada only restricted the manufacture of liquors more than 2& 1/2%, Beer was not affected by the federal law. The Beaver tray that Leon posted is from this period, as well as this tray.
Regal_5.png
In 1927 the existing prohibition laws were lifted here in Ontario and the Hamilton Brewing Association had acquired a few other breweries around the country, went through a few different names and the breweries under it’s umbrella also changed names.

The brewery at 16 Bay St was called Hamilton – Regal for a couple of years, This tray and the one I posted earlier are from this period.
Regal_4.png
In 1930 they changed the name to Regal Brewery Company Ltd. This tray is from that era, it is a variation to the one Leon posted, The font around the outside is smaller and the painted Rooster is not quite as fine detail.
Regal_1.png
The brewery changed hands in 1937, became The Taylor & Bate Brewery and was closed in 1938.

An ashtray,

Hope this helps,

No problem for the info, Yes I like that (stock) tray as well, so much so that it's hung in the kitchen next to our eating table for every day enjoyment,

forgive my ignorance but I know nothing of the Detroit Regal, I don't even know what street it's on....LOL

can you tell me more and maybe I can come up something?

I do suspect that this brewery and several others here in southern Ontario strived at selling product to anyone who would be interested in smuggling into the USA with whatever labels, which one of your law enforcement officers said "Cheap Canadian printers"?

The Detroit Regal did have some underworld connections in it’s ownership structure.

Yes, the two Sammies could deny all day that they had a mob background but everyone knew better. It took a lot of effort for them to get a license to brew beer after prohibition but eventually they were successful.

Regal Brewing Company had a sales force that used techniques the two Sammies learned prior to prohibition. It was pretty simple. Either buy our beer or people are going to end up in the hospital.

Regal is a very interesting brewery. I did a lot of research on it about a year ago and started to write an article last winter but never finished it. Hopefully, I will get back to it this winter.

I found a half full pickle jar of home-use bottle caps (or a ‘boatload’ according to one RB’er) in a coal chute of an old home in Madison, WI- turned out to be rare Regals from Detroit. This is all I have left. Ziphippie

I know Plenty about the Detroit Regal just don't know much about the Canadian Regal. It seems pretty obvious there is some kind of connection between the 2. Been curious to know what the connection is for past 25 years. LEON.

I know most of us have the book “Brewed in Detroit” and this is old news but for those who don’t -
According to the book the founder was Raymond Irion who was the son of A.L. Irion who was the head of British American Brewing Company in Windsor.

Here is a link with info on the brewery in Windsor.
Just scraping the surface here but I bet with some real detective work the info is out there.

http://www.walkervilletimes.com/42/brewed-windsor.html

EDIT- added some more pics and a blow-up of the incredible newspaper article from Longopener. Gotta love the 2 Sammie’s...would be a great name for a brand of beer in Detroit today.

I did some more research in the 1996 self published book by Richard Sweet called The Directory of Canadian Breweries regarding the history of the Regal Brewery. I hope this clears things up for you,

The Formation of Canadian Breweries;

Step One - The Formation of the Hamilton Brewing Association.

The Hamilton Brewing Association was formed in 1903 to hold the assets of the following breweries,
1)-H. Kuntz Brewery Ltd. (aka Dominion Brewery) est. 1873
2)-John Gompf’s Ontario Brewery; est. 1864; closed 1904
3)-Grant’s Spring Brewery Co., Ltd.; Est. 1853
The above breweries were all located in Hamilton and acquired in 1903.
4)-Dominion Brewery Co.; Ltd.; est. 1878 acquired in 1926 (location Toronto)

Step Two - The Formation of the Canadian Brewing Corporation, Ltd.

The Canadian Brewing Corporation, Ltd. was formed in 1928 and held the assets of the following breweries including those previously acquired by The Hamilton Brewing Association;
1)-The Hamilton Brewing Assoc. (location Hamilton)
2)-Grant’s Spring (Location Hamilton)
3)-Dominion Brewery (location Toronto)
4)-Empire Brewing Co. Ltd.; Est. 1899 acquired 1928 (location Brandon Manitoba)
5) The Kiewel Brewing Co., Ltd. Est. 1925 acquired 1928 (location St. Boniface Manitoba.)

Step Three - The Formation of the Brewing Corporation of Ontario.

The Brewing Corporation of Ontario was formed on March 8th 1929 to hold the brewing assets of E.P. Taylor controlled breweries: The Brading Breweries and British American Brewing Company plus two privately held breweries; Taylor and Bate and The Kuntz Brewery.
1)-The Bradings Breweries, Ltd. Est.1865 (Location Ottawa)
2)-British American Co. Ltd. Est.1885 (location Windsor)
3)-The Kuntz brewery Ltd. Est. 1857 (location Waterloo)
4)-Taylor & Bate Est. 1829 (location St. Catharines)

Step Four - The formation of the Brewing Corporation of Canada, Ltd.

The Canadian Brewing Corporation was offered an exchange of stock with the Brewing Corporation of Ontario. All stock was exchanged and on October 9th 1930 the name of the Brewing Corporation of Ontario was changed to the Brewing Corporation of Canada Ltd. The new company held the following breweries,
1)-The Bradings Breweries (Ottawa Ont.)
2)-British American Brewing. (Windsor Ont.)
3)-The Kuntz Brewery (Waterloo Ont.)
4)-Taylor & Bate (St. Catharines Ont.)
5)-Regal Brewing (Hamilton Ont.)
6)-Grant’s Spring Brewery (Hamilton Ont.)
7)-Dominion Brewery (Toronto Ont.)
8)-The Empire Brewing (Brandon MB)
9)-Kiewel Brewing (St. Boniface MB)

Step Five - Canadian Breweries was created on April 21st 1937 with the acquisition of another half dozen breweries.

Here's a tip Tray,
Regal_TT_1.png
I suspect this tip tray is from the era that the brewery was named Taylor & Bate (1936 & 37), their flagship brand was Club Pilsener.

Here is an ad from when Regal in zip tops first appeared in the New Orleans market. This appeared around July 4, 1963.

For those of you not from the New Orleans area, lagniappe is like a little bonus, something extra included.
Collector of fine rust, craft cans, and anything related to New Orleans area breweries past and present.
