Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
Just got back from the post office...
Wow, be prepared to pay more!
Stamps are up 10%, from 50 to 55 cents.
(I talked to a longtime postal worker, and she said that is the biggest increase, percentage wise, that she has seen since she has been there.)
Packages/boxes are up an average of 8%- I got that info from the PO worker too.
I think they have also increased the charge per zone, IE: the farther away, the more you'll pay!
Also, there is almost no difference between 4th class and priority.
Not too long ago, there used to be a huge difference between priority and 4th class!, so if you were not in a hurry to get a box someplace, the cost was about 1/2 to 3/4 the priority rate.
So that means 4th class has taken a monumental increase!
Just what we all wanted to hear.

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
I stand corrected on some of the zone rates.
Closer shipping zones (Zones 1/2 through Zone 5) are seeing bigger rate increases from $0.55 (Zone 1/2 = $7.65) to $0.61 (Zone 5 = $8.76).
Packages traveling to farther shipping zones are seeing a smaller rate increase – going up by $0.26 (Zone 7 = $10.55) and to $0.40 (Zone 8 = $11.20)
Other than Zone 1/2 where the rate increase is $0.64, the increase is relatively small at $0.08 (Zone 3 = $8.50), $0.03 (Zone 4 = $9.40) and no rate increase for farther Zones 5-8.
----------- ----------
2019 Rates
Priority Mail will see an average increase of 5.9%.
First Class Package Service
Overall rates for First Class Package Service will increase by 11.9%.
Zone-based pricing is being added to First Class Package Service in 2019. **** BIG CHANGE!!!!!!****
*** Any package going across the country (Zone 8) is seeing a significant rate increase going up from $0.43 (Zone 8 – 1 ounce = $3.09) to $1.43 (Zone 8 – 13 ounces = $5.53)
***13 ounce packages in particular are rising across all zones, increasing $0.84 (Zone 1/2 = $4.94) to $1.43 (Zone 8 = $5.53)

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
Not liking this rate hike very much. Actually I haven't liked any rate hike.
This rate hike will affect the costs of packages, both first class and priority, and yes they are going up, especially at the retail window.
First class packages will now be subject to zone pricing, which means it will cost a bit/lot more to send that small parcel with a beer can across the country than to someone in a neighboring state.
For example: one well packaged empty beer can, 4.01 to 8.0 ounces total weight will cost between $4.39 and $4.81 depending on which zone. The current price is $3.75 for all zones including Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, etc.
Although not yet confirmed, the eBay TRS seller rate for the same 4.01 to 8.0 ounce package will cost between $3.18 and $3.63 depending on which zone. The current price is $2.79 (5 ounces) to $3.18 (8 ounces).
I don't even want to discuss priority mail rates, which are already high, especially on 1 to 2 pound packages.
Not much you can do about it as the rates go up every year on all classes of packages.
One thing that you can do is buy a bunch of 'forever' stamps. They are 50 cents each through close of business on Saturday, January 26. They will be worth 55 cents each when you mail letters (and packages) until you run out of stamps. Pretty much all stamps are 'Forever' just don't get any that have a denomination on them -Postmaster Billy.
BTW, here's the whole new price list effective January 27, 2019:

On the other hand walking across a large country and hand delivering a package is still an option..

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
I'm not worried about the cost of stamps. I had to buy a book of stamps around Thanksgiving. I purposely did not buy a holiday related design because it will probably be July before I use them up. Generally, the only thing I use stamps for are birthday cards for the nieces and nephew.
As for packages, I would rather not see those prices go up but inflation is normal so as long as the USPS stays competitive with UPS and FedEx, I'm okay. Most of the packages I send are via ebay so I get a discount on the postage and then the mail carrier picks the packages up off my porch. I prefer it to the option Josh mentioned.

Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
Sold and mailed one bottle the other day (shipping included) and couldn’t believe that the cheapest rate was more than $10 (and it wasn’t mailed very far). Good thing I got a little more than that for the stupid bottle!

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
This sorta sucks if you are buying/selling low value cans like craft cans. My starting list price for any can on ebay is $3.95. Who's going to pay $8 for some "regular can"? Should make trade shows a better option if you are looking for them though.
I dump cans and cars, if you find old cars & trucks while dumping, please let me know.

Good point. No shipping for the buyer and no ebay and PayPal fees for the seller at shows. By the way, Winterfest in Frankenmuth is only a week and a half away, and the forecast is calling for an easy drive.

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
Yes, it seems excessive that they jumped 10% on stamps! It used to be 1-2 cents per year!. Shipping is becoming cost-prohibitive on these low priced items. I am selling off a large collection of DVDs, which thank goodness qualifies for Media Mail rates. Currently I can ship up to 1 lb for $2.61 and that is only going up to $2.75. Phew! I charge $2.99 flat rate for my DVD sales no matter how many people buy (I have sold hundreds and have hundreds more :( ) I know it is not legal (for all you Postal Inspectors out there), but could some people sneak shipping Breweriana smalls with Media Mail?? Of course that would be wrong and I guess problematic if your package gets lost!

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
With most any rule in life, it is possible to break the rule but it's not a good idea even if you do not get caught. If a person does not agree with the rules around Media Mail, they should not use Media Mail.

The charges Rand linked don't go into effect until Jan 27. I did notice about a year ago the average 1 can priority mail on ebay went up at least 50 cents to about $7.50. Not sure if that was ebay slashing their discount or USPS.

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
I guess the one consolation remains rationalizing how relatively little it costs to have someone pick up your letter or small package at your mailbox or porch and carry it across the country and place it in someone else's mailbox. Not a heck of a lot else you and buy for 55 cents anymore, and your package will get to its destination for the price of a beer.

I was the high bidder on a couple bottle labels this morning. It's going to cost me $3 to get them from Austria to my mailbox in Michigan. That sounds good to me.

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
The price for priority boxes did go up in the last couple of weeks. $7.50 was always pretty much on the mark for me until just recently. Now it is looking like $8.25 or $8.50 may be the new prevailing number. I need to send a few more boxes so the pattern is clearer to me. Matt

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
Depending on where you are located a one pound or less box will cost between $7.35 and $9.30 for priority mail at the retail window.
A 1 to 2 pound box will cost $7.85 to $14.20 retail.
The priority mail rates using eBay's shipping are $6.95 to $8.25 (up to 1 lb.) and $7.42 to $10.86 (1-2 lbs.)
The prices vary depending on distance, closer is cheaper; distant is expensive.
All the prices as of 1/27/2019: https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm#_c031

Re: Post office charges go waaaaay up!!!
First class package through Ebay is still the best deal going IMHO. Up to 16 oz (vs. only up to 13 oz. not through Ebay). Still will often cost less than $4.00. In my experience, package usually gets there in 2-3 days, just like Priority. I recently sent one to Puerto Rico. Just a couple of days and it was delivered.oldindiapaleale wrote: ↑Tue Feb 19, 2019 7:29 pm Depending on where you are located a one pound or less box will cost between $7.35 and $9.30 for priority mail at the retail window.

Priority, if it going across the country and weighs a few pounds, or more, has gotten rather expensive.

I've lost about every ebay auction that I have bid on. I have seen the price of shipping, in the auctions, going north of $9 for shipping for 1 can.. I sell my stuff at shows... I forgot where the post office is.... our local Jamestown post office is open from 10-2... soon, it too, will be closed.
