2019 Can Tournament

#1

Post by idigrust »

As in the past, we hold a 64 can tournament like the NCAA does. We have had toughest can and best looking can tourneys, what should this year's be?

I thought ugliest can was a good idea last year. Could stick with 30's, 40's, 50's , and 60's brackets to keep the number of nominations within reason.

How about four categories: bock, ale, lager, other (malt liquor, porter, half and half)?

I say go for favorite in those four categories. Can should be a dumper. Favorite can be, most desirable, best looking, etc., depending on the person and the point of view.

How about best looking craft cans? Although I am not really into collecting them, it might be fun to see the best ones out there and vote on them. We might learn a thing or two as well.

I love the idea above this. While I don’t collect craft cans either, some of them are real sharp.

I vote best looking can and separate it into categories: cones, flats, zips, ring pulls, sta-tabs, and craft cans......maybe combine ring pulls and sta-tabs?

Let's do a divided nation tournament..
Coastal states not including those touching the Gulf against in-between flyover states(the rest). First determine best in each category from both sides, then toe to toe.

I actually think coast against interior is good.

I agree with the best looking craft can idea. A lot of these breweries are really creative.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio
* SummerSwap, July 21 & 22, Frankenmuth Michigan

All good ideas but I would think regions/state/beer types type contests may end up in the same place as last year and another Trumps Ale victory may not be in the spirit of a new tourney. We all have our favorites so maybe something like craft beers or tabs would be a better way for some of us to get familiar with something we don't collect. I still like ugly can best though, would take some thought and some review of the USBC unlike picking all the beauties.

I like the ugliest can idea. We always think of the best-looking cans we'd love to have in our collections--how about the homeliest looking can instead, the can that never got asked to the dances?

Scott, I like the way you think. However, let's go with something everyone on this board will really appreciate and can get their arms around...
best looking Ohio can?

On a more serious note, how about best looking can duo? Like cans that came in an Ale & Beer. Entries would feature the two cans side by side.

As a collector of can from around the world - best looking Canadian, best looking Mexican … or best European... best Asian … ;)

Best set?

Best from each time zone?

By Brewery - say a fab-five or "six pack"?
Expired once again in Portland ...

Lots of goog ideas!

Currents/Craft Brewed? Really? Then let it run for a couple of years.

Also, per Jim Wolf, Volume II now has 4,000+ new and updated images.

I have always though a best "mascot" or best "side pane" contest would be cool. We always see the fronts of the cans but rarely the sides.

Some examples:

-The Brownie dude on the side of the Brownie can.
-the side panel on the SB cone with the pirates and their treasure
-the little Red Top dude
-Bucky on the Buckey cans
-the fat Noch-Eins guy
-etc.
I shall leave no cone unturned!!

I do also like the craft can idea. I don't pay any attention to those and it would be interesting to me.

I say go with favorite. Can should be a dumper, after all we are the Rusty Bunch. Members can submit pictures of their own cans that they dumped. Favorite can be, best graphics, most desirable, etc., depending on their perspective.
