Cone Top Lighters

One of my many side collections is Cone Top Lighters. Below are photos of what I have so far. It's been awhile since I added a can to this collection. Does anyone out there have something I might be able to add to this endeavor?

I sold this version of a Duquesne lighter when I sold off most my cans a few years back, I'm still in touch with the person that bought my cans, he may still have it.

The little cylinder on top of the cap of the can comes off revealing a typical lighter mechanism.

Love the lighters. Here is one that you may not have seen. It popped up as a buy it now on ebay about 7 years ago. It is an applied sticker over the original pelican lighter. Sorry not for sale.

This is the first I have seen something like this but I have wondered before if it was possible to buy just the top and put it on any cone. Some cones, like Canadian Ace, are common as a lighter because they were sold that way. This display could explain cones rarely seen as a lighter.

I saw this Frankenmuth lighter at the Winterfest show. I had never seen one like this before and the seller said the same. Maybe rather than being sold as a lighter, this was just an ordinary cone that a person added a lighter to on their own.

One way of confirming if it was made for use as a lighter is to pop the complete top off and see if the can is fill with the cotton like material that is used to absorb the liquid.

Most authentic cone top lighters have a sticker attached to the back of the can or on the bottom.

It is usually east to spot former lighters that have been converted back to a regular can. I have seen numerous Canadian Ace and Goetz Country Club cones that have a humidity pattern on the back that mimics the sticker. Over the years, the paper got wet or simply absorbed moisture, leaving humidity underneath. You can see the shape of the sticker even after it's been removed and the can was cleaned.

I see the Canadian Ace more often than any other. There is one in an antique store here in San Jose and I think he wants $65 for it. I have no idea on the value of them other than what the can is worth.

Interesting to notice on the cardboard advertising piece how times have changed. Smoking was once an accepted practice every where. My mom used to smoke and I remember smelling it on my clothes growing up and if you entered a smokers home the smell would hit you in the face.

Funny you should post that, same with my mother. Have you ever been at a show and picked up a can from a tote and got a whiff of smoke off the can?? I sure have. My have times changes
