Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I thought we discussed this before in here but doing a search revealed nothing. So figured I do it. Pictured is the Pfeiffer scenic 9 can set. Cans are rated by me & only my Opinion. I'm pretty sure most Michigan Collectors would agree on my 3 picked being the toughest 3. But which one of the 3 are tougher then the other 2 ect ect.? This has been a debate for many years with most opinions varying but most agree these 3 the toughest. Any other Michigan collectors or collector got a opinion on what order each can should be in from toughest to easiest? LEON.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
Seems to be unanimous on Dark Sailboat, Pike/Muskie, and Skier as the toughest 3. No ageeement on which of the 3 is actual toughest example.
Ore Boat and Deer are semi tough with the Deer maybe being considered tougher than Ore Boat.
Next 4 are easiest....I only ever dumped the Geese and Trout but still have both in Decent Grade 2 condition.

Good job finding that Clarkston. Guess I didn't go back far enough (11 years) or didn't use the right search words. I see the older post pics are gone. LEON.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I would rate the Pike can the hardest, followed by Dark Sailboat and Skier. The other six are probably equivalent to each other in rarity. This is probably the best looking set ever made. They are somewhat hard to find, which makes it a fun set to put together.
By the way Leon, That is a great looking OD Pfieffer’s you have on the shelf. I’m jealous. I’m still looking for one.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
Wow, some really beautiful cans. I agree regarding the three toughest. I have six of the nine cans in this set. I remember talking to Dave Launt about the skier once and he said he had only ever dumped one of them. I am not sure what he said about the other two. The skier was on ebay in October for the first time in a thousand years. Unfortunately, at $162, the price was out of my budget. Here is a link.

Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I somehow have a dumper of the dark sailboat, so that must be the easiest of the three. Seems like I have seen more of the skier than the pike. I'd put the ore boat on par with the bottom 4.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I never gave this much thought but I’d agree with everyone above. I’ve never ever seen a dark sailboat can anywhere. And for the record, none of these are really easy to dump IMHO. 1000’s of pfeiffers later and I’ve only found the deer and fish can (not the pike). I always say, if you dig a pfeiffer scene can you’re having a really good day!

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I would concur with what's been said about the toughest three. I've only dug 2, the Catamaran and the pheasant, and they were from the same dump a couple of years ago in the U.P. I pretty sure Chris Taylor, Bob Lavelle and Andy Caldwell have dug there fair share of these cans. Would like to know their thoughts on dug cans in this series.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I remember about 15 years ago taking a 2track through a field towards a lake. Just before I get to lake I seen some scattered flats along side of 2 track. Ends up a few of them were these Pfeiffer scenic cans. I maybe got about 6 of them with maybe 3 different ones. Put like 3 of them in my collection & sold the rest on ebay. This is the only time I can remember finding them. Pic of some of them below. LEON.

I could only identify the deer can by the chest of the deer.
Curious to see how many I end up finding.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
For what it's worth, it took me a LOT longer to find the Skier than all the rest--I had a complete set except for the skier for quite a few years.
Let me ask a slightly different question … how do the dull gold/metallic gold cans compare? I seem to see a lot more of the metallic gold than the flat gold, but it is mighty hard to tell them apart on most dumpers …

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I've had multiples of all of these cans except the Muskie and Skier. Ended up buying a complete set to get the Muskie and Skier cans. Since then I've seen few Muskie, Skier, and Dark Sailboat cans for sale.
As for which is tougher, dull or metallic gold? Not sure which is tougher. I decided not to chase both dull and metallic gold. I have 4 dull and 5 metallic gold. Since so many of these have new lids, I went for all original. I have 6 original and 3 with new lids. The 3 new lid cans I have are the Pheasant, Single Sailboat, and Skier.
On the cans with new lids. In the late 1970's I when to a can show at a small Library just outside Detroit. I must have been 16 or 17 at the time. There was a younger kid, that had a couple of cases of Pfeiffer scene cans without lids. His grandfather had worked for Pfeiffer and gave him the cans. He was trading them for common cans. Don't remember how many, but it was many, maybe 10 commons for each can.

Since 1979, I’ve only dumped the scenic cans twice; One of the deer in the UP and one deer over by Kalamazoo.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

What year were these produced? 1960? And for how long? I’m quite certain it was a short run.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I'm going to put up a new picture with Prices. What I think is a realistic Price (from my 25+ years of collecting them) & ebay Prices from what I've seen them get on ebay in past few years in grade 1 or better. Hope this will help some not familiar with these cans make a more informed decision on them. LEON.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I'd buy it for $40. I bought or got high bid on a nice clean one on ebay last year for about $35.00 with no top. I told seller I'd like to pick up in person since they were only the next town over in Royal Oak. They said OK. They then made it extremely difficult to make the transaction by giving me the run around & then ignoring me. Next thing I know they cancel Auction & refund my money. I suspect because they were not happy with my high bid amount & really did not want to sell at that price. With the old ebay you could not do this. LEON.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
I have seen nice indoor ones go for $40. My trout can was donated by Beer Cans Plus to a chapter raffle. They had a $50 sticker on it. Leroy won it and then I bought it from him for $40. Like your can, the price for my can is significantly different than what Leon quoted but I still believe Leon's price estimates are good. It comes down to premium people pay for grade 1 or grade 1+ over even a grade 1- can. My can is beautiful but has some humidity spotting which quickly brings the price down. Maybe your can was a similar situation or maybe it was just bad luck.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

I could see one of the easier 6 in a nice clean indoor but slightly spotty grade 1- with or without a top get $40-$60. My Prices were just a average & opinion. Others may vary. ebay is just way to unpredictable to use as a value guide in my opinion.pinnacle-project wrote: ↑Sun Dec 02, 2018 4:30 pmI have seen nice indoor ones go for $40. Only $40 for the Trout can. One just sold here in Rusty Bunch Advertise Section for $175 with no top. No insult intended. LEON.

Yes, That is odd. I tell you what. I'll trade you my 6 rusty ones & $600 for your 6 clean ones. A deal? That way all 9 of yours can match condition wise. ™®LEON™®.

Re: Pfeiffer 9 can scenic set rareness rating
To me, those are more beautiful cans in the set. Since I collect wildlife/game fish cans. I have 3 of them. Seeking Geese, Ship - Since I live on the Great Lakes . Muskie or Northern pike.. Speaking Muskie or Northern pike is the toughest one. If you find a grade 1 for sale normally it either will sold out quickly or price is way to high. I'm in doubt if I ever get a complete set.
JohnLi67- Nice complete set.

This is probably the best looking set ever made. They are somewhat hard to find, which makes it a fun set to put together.
By the way Leon, That is a great looking OD Pfieffer’s you have on the shelf. I’m jealous. I’m still looking for one.
That pic is from my old Collection in the 1990's. Way back then I sold most of that Michigan Collection to buy my 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. And before that sold some of my non Michigan Collection to put down payment on my House. Now I'm on my 3rd Collection. My 9 Pfeiffer set now a days is kinda rusty as seen in my other ™®Pic. ™®
