My take from the Sandhill Sanford NC show Colt 45 Detroit paint over

Great show with Jim Romine at the helm....picked up a few good items. Rainier is from Kevin Dooley. Dodger can from Jim Romine for $15.....steal...great history book on North Carolina breweries... But my favorite is the Colt 45 Stout Malt Liquor from Detroit that was a paint over. It made me remember Don Specks recent rub off that produced the 12Oz. So you have to ask yourself. Was National prepared to release the Stout Malt Liquor in both 12 and 16 ozs but something went wrong? All prior to National opening in Detroit? Where they planning based on marketing to focus on a certain ethnic group and decided against it resulting in all the cans to be painted over? @storzman

@Leon Only flat top versions I've seen have been paint overs. My flat alhappens to be National and not American Can. The zip in usbc Supplement is American Can. Just a canning thing? National has been known to paint over plenty of perfectly good cans......

when you said National did not know if you meant National Brewing co or National can co.. Which was my original question when I answered this late last night but erased it or edited to my new comment above. LEON.

@Leon I originally meant National "the brewery" but now noticed that the can was a National "the canning company". My other guess might be that National "the canning company" was in an effort to produce the cans but then American "the canning company" said "Hey......we can produce the cans in a zip top and oh hey National the canning company isn't...".

Just another thought

At the time the cans were repainted I assume they were in flats sheets, at that time they would not of been a zip top or flat top & could be made into either one. If Customer requested zips then they would be sent to brewery to be filled with the zips already installed & no bottom. If requested flats then sent with bottom lid & no top. So the Brewery was either adding a flat bottom or a flat top depending on how they received them. Some would request flats because they were cheaper, maybe for there cheaper lower end Beer, I think some got flats early on if they liked it or not because at first there was a shortage of the zip top lids when they first came out because of the demand & they could not keep up. My Guess is Pilsen Brewery in last ditch effort to stay alive bought up cheap old stock sheets & had them painted over lidded as flats (cheaper) to save money. Probably even put 11 oz's in there instead of 12. This would of been around 1962 till there demise in 1968, seems in 68 the Land of Lakes came in a pull tab? LEON.
