Post Office pranksters?

Got a package today that arrived wrapped in clear plastic with the message below on the plastic.
I read it and immediately thought:

"They killed my package.... "

Upon inspection the box was fine as was the can inside.(see pic) So what are they doing...a Post office practical joke on me?

"We killed your package and wanted you to know we killed your package and we won't be paying you a dime for it...just kidding! "

I've gotten many damaged, smashed in corners or holes & rips in cardboard box & at the same time written or stamped or affixed to box is a bunch of FRAGILE GLASS statements all around box. And I never got a Sorry for Damage note or label????? That's Gratitude. LEON.

I got one of those a couple of months ago. If memory serves, it was a magazine that was partially torn, or something similar. It was nothing too important, that I remember.

I have received a note like that before. I think it's a nice gesture on their part.

Last year I got the "body bag" with the package label, no package, a rubber stamped "received without contents" and a letter about the Mail Recovery Center in Atlanta, Georgia. I filed an online search request, which was a waste of time, as I never got the $45 worth of old comic books that I won on ebay.

I got one of those once with a letter; the flap had come unglued and was hanging open but the check was still inside the envelope. Another time I got a box with a quart cone that had actual tire tracks over it (crushed, mostly) and was denied an apology or anything because it wasn't insured against routine handling damage. I somehow wasn't offered the option of insuring against once-in-a-lifetime epic accidental inadvertent sledgehammer damage? It feels like absurd stand-up comedy since such a tiny and insignificant fraction of damaged parcels get this level of attention.

Operated small college mailroom in central Florida. 2001-2013 duties found daily mail volume shifting from from 35-40 tubs to two or three. Damaged content, as shown in post, was not common. Mess-ups usually occurred to magazines and first class mail. Mechanical processing chewed legal size envelopes on occasion while improper sealing/taping of boxed content were errors from the sender (un-cancelled raw postage was more common).

Ultimate worse was decade of National Geographic (monthly magazine) distruction. Sent via media mail to company who would hard bound each year, they were water soaked. Trailer which they were transported had backed into a roof and had corner damage. This allowed rain water to enter thus saturating sections of flooring. Cardboard boxes holding this content absorbed this moisture like a sponge. Each box held two volumes so these five containers weighed triple what the initial weight was. Heavy see-through garbage bag wraps were used to secure the content. Affixed with these 'sorry' notices.
Library director needed to see this funky glob to believe. Then drove my work vehicle to the maintenance dumpster and lugged it in (would never dry out for recycling).

Post Office said it was our error because content should have been packed/wrapped in plastic... to forgo such an incident.
Otherwise they did a good job considering volume we annually received. Many will dispute this. It was my experience, however.

I used to work at UPS. During that time, I certainly saw damage that was the fault of UPS. I also saw a lot of bad decisions made by senders. Some people are just not that bright but I think most of the bad decisions I saw were made by people who worked in their company's shipping department and did not appear to care if they did a good job or not.
