Rawley, it will be interesting to see how you do on this can. The rare "yellow" version! Last week an all painted can did quite well, so who knows? I am presuming this is an old Wolpe can?

Thanks Matt for bringing it to everyone attention! I appreciate it!
I have over 30 people tracking this Ultra Rare can! Whom ever gets it will have one of the rarest and scarcest California cone tops to exist!

Re: Maier Select
This is one of the truly rare California cans although there are a few more than six out there. One person I spoke with about this a few years back could account for closer to a dozen. I was fortunate enough to find a very rough but completely original one on ebay about 10-12 years ago. It was mixed in with a bunch of common cones and everybody missed it. The front is washed out with a ghost image but there is some paint along the seam. It was certainly found out in the desert but fortunately did not end up in Wout's art studio.
Did you upgrade this one Rawley or decide you could live without it?

Re: Maier Select
Hi Scott,
Thanks for the intel. I did upgrade. I have been tracking this can for 20+ years. With my own personal research I can account for only 6. So that is the # I need to go with. As mentioned prior a lot of folks are tracking it so there is quit an interest. I have already turned a couple buy it now requests. It could be striped of it paint to expose it's natural state or left alone as is. That's up to the lucky buyer.
I guess only the Shadow knows how many exists?

Re: Maier Select
Known to exist numbers are typically a bit subjective when you get past 2 or 3. Still with as few out there as this can it's probably possible to get an accurate count within one or two. There are 2-3 unaltered in fairly good condition. The one in the book is the best and I believe Dan Andrews had a decent one that now resides near the Mexican border. There are a few of these repaints floating around. I've seen pictures of another beside the one currently on ebay and there are probably at least a couple more. Then you have your really crummy dumpers of which most or all probably came from one or two finds. Some of these certainly became the repaints but a few were spared. The dented one pictured here I'll have to believe is a Maier steingirl and I can post a picture of mine as well. There's probably a couple more around (because there always is) so the math points towards the 10-12 range.
Given that there are only 2-3 in good condition with color on the front, it's definitely a nearly impossible can. The fact that there are a small handful of major repaints or really roachy dumpers as well does not detract from that.
Let's see a picture of the upgrade.

Re: Maier Select
Scott,
Do the fact that I have posted pictures of cans and signs on this forum before of my collection, They get poached and end up on Dan S (Can Man Dan's) site. Then he claims them as part of his collection. So sorry to say I can no longer post pictures to do that reason.
I will have a picture of my upgrade in Watsonville.

Rawley don't throw stones.... One time you did ask me to remove pictures of your items from my site and I did. Then a few weeks later I'm searching Craigslist and other collectors sites and there you are using my crawlspace pictures in your ads....after that , your pictures went back up on my site.

Now back to our regular scheduled programming...there's probably a dozen Maier girls out there , 2 or 3 with color and about 10 desert cans

Sorry Charlie, certainly more than 6 known of the Maier "Barmaid"...and Silver Beer is probably the rarest California cone with only 2 known and sold in SoCal. Come over to Dan's and you can see it for your records....

Re: Maier Select
At least 12
The first ever known was dumped by Wally Gilbert.
What's his name from Indio and his cousin's husband John found 6 - most were repainted.
Hal Noehren dig 3 (the one in the book is one).
roy found 1 (surface desert can)
Hal and roy found another that what's his name missed.
If anyone is curious I can pretty much say where these 12 were found. roy

Re: Maier Select
Wally Gilbert found his on a pull off about 1 mile north of the turn off to Chihuahua Valley Road which is about 3-4 miles north of the old Sunshine Summit Café (Northeast san Diego County).
What’s his name from Indio and his cousin’s husband John found 6 in an open old trash pit 1 mile due east of the old Sunshine Summit Cafe.
Hal and roy found 1 in the same area.
Hal dug 3 due east of Fresno in the Sierras.
One was found by roy a couple of miles north of Desert Center Ca. scattered desert sun fried cans.
The ones Hal dug are original the one in the book is Glenn Hintz’s and the Leon posted a picture of is Dan Andrews old one that now resides in North Tijuana. A couple of the faded desert ones never got repainted.
According to Wally Gilbert he had written Maier Brewing Co. and they had no record of the can.
When Hal dug his they were mixed in with white Rainier cones in fact until he cleaned them he didn’t know the Maier Stein Girls were in there. Next spring we re-dug the hole to check the ones he tossed back in. No more Maiers but the date on the Rainiers was Feb 1942. roy
