Burgermeister help needed

#1

Post by huberman »

Hi all, I found this Burgermeister can (46-26, O/I 173) at a nearby antique store. They want quite a bit of $$$ for it. What do you think is a fair price for the can? The book says $275 but it was published in 2001.

Rand, the O/I whisperer what do you think?

Chris,

I sold the following can on Ebay last fall for $325 Buy it Now. Lasted maybe an hour. Sold too cheap??

My can probably had a slightly better front (maybe), but the can you have pictured is obviously WAY better on the OI panel, seam, and side text. Don't know what the lids look like. Nice examples can get to the $1k+ range.

Hope that helps a little.

I think the book is a nice reference for cans in good condition. When you get into pristine examples you can easily double the price or even way more. I would show them the book and point out every flaw and see what you can negotiate. Good luck!

Problem is, if the seller has found a result like the one below online, they are probably using that as a basis.

I'm not sure this can is quite as tough as it used to be. The one I have pictured above was one of four that surfaced last year. Still a desirable OI can. Just a few more seem to be floating around these days.

Condition being everything, stain marking on the left stocking is an immediate distraction. Like an annoying zip on the face of the homecoming queen, what should be offered has everything to do with devaluing flaws. Gently bring this into the conversation. More examples of this 12 oz Ale seem to appear vs the companion, yellow background Burgie beer 12 ouncer, in the past decade.
Anything over $700. would be pushing it. It may be tough to pass on this example should the price be steeper but this isn't the first tease you've stumbled upon. Encourage the vendor to keep you in mind should the item remain a dust 'collector.'

Sorry.....I've been out of touch for a month or two now. My wife is running for judge in Madera County, and everything had to take a back seat. Political campaigns are all consuming. Huberman....thanks for asking, but I have to say, I'm probably the worst at pricing cans. Nothing makes any sense in this hobby as far as what any given can will command on any given day. I wouldn't be surprised seeing that can go for $200.....nor would I be surprised to see it go for the above mentioned $700. It's chaos. The trick is to be willing to walk away.....and then actually walk away and erase it from your mind. More times than not they come looking for you. Or put another way....if you love something, set it free....if it finds you, it was meant to be.

Brothers together
Brothers together
Hi all, thanks for the feedback. Today I went to the store armed with the USBC beer cans volume one and the USBC O/I book. I met the owner of the store and he was impressed with my knowledge of beer cans. I made my initial offer to him that had been communicated to his son and it took some explaining of the book price, condition, rarity, etc before we struck a deal. I got it for about $200 less than the sticker price before taxes. I already had the big brother (Qt.) so the siblings are together, sorry for the pic quality, my camera is picky.

He had a Canadian Ace pelican lighter cone top that he wanted me to look at. I could not pinpoint the exact USBC # due to the label on the can. I gave him a price range for the can and he was smack dab in the middle on it.

Nice to find a beer can you like in your home town.
