Are Cans with Bock Beer vanity Lids {Flat Tops} considered too be a Bock Can?....Even though it doesn't say Bock Beer on the Label itself??

Ok 1 yes....Cool...So My next question is would one of these Bock Beer Vanity Lid Cans be tougher than the same brand without the Bock lid?....

I recall seeing on Ebay awhile back a Old Timers Lager Beer from West Bend Litha Brewing Company with a Bock Beer Lid go for nearly 300.00.....This is a 20.00 Can normally.....So maybe We can have a Show and Tell and see how many of these are out there?

Yes. I think some brewers used a bock lid because they could not justify the cost of new label for a short run beer. That is just my hunch though, there could be another reason.
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

This is what I was thinking as well...The key words here are **Short Run**...Thus making them Scarce to a certain point!?!....I have always looked for these with Wisconsin Cans and have come up empty so far :smt021 !!

I've said this in here at least 10 times before, Way back in early 2000 i seen someone selling a can lidder on ebay. this Auction included like 500 lids. about 100 lids in each package of lids & maybe 5 packages. These were wrapped in brown paper like a paper bag type material. The top of these packages were open so you could see the lids inside. One package was all Bock lids, probably about 100 of them. Where are they now? on someone's new can & now it's selling for 10 times what it's worth with that phoney fake lid. LEON.

If you look thru USBC I, you will find some cases where cans are listed separately if they have a “BOCK BEER” on the lid. With the digital supplement, I think it was determined that we would not include any of these cans. One of the reasons is the relidding of cans as noted above.

As for how I handle it, those differences are not in my displayed cans, but I still hold on to them in my minor variation boxes.

Absolutely. I consider Stout lids to be a Stout beer can.

And I consider brewery lids to be the origination of the can.

Here's proof that a bock lid increases the value. I sold this can on ebay a short time ago. Given how common Bohemian Club is and the poor condition of the can, this can should not have gone for much at all. Instead, somebody paid $6.50 plus shipping. Thankfully, the can was at least all original.

I don't see Cans with the Bock Beer lids very often...The last one was the Old Timers I spoke of earlier and that went for nearly 300.00....I just watched it I didn't bid it was too clean!!....Could have been a re-lidded Can....With these Cans I feel the more off-grade the better!!!.....Not to far gone though!!.... :smt023

Here are my bock lid cans. 3 were full. The Bohemian was part of a full 6 pack. The Hi Brau pull tab and the Weber were found full. I paid $100 for the full Bohemian. I paid $150 for the Weber. Only because they were full and I emptied the beer. I don't think I would have paid that high had they not been full.

The rest just have a bock lid. The Hi Brau flat is the only one that is air sealed and may have been relidded.
Verification is the key. Some of the older bock lids have the canning codes on them. If the can is from continental and the lid is from Am Can... pretty sure its a relid or doner lid. This happened recently to a friend who purchased his on ebay and saw the lid and sent it back. The picture did not have the full lid shown,,, just the Bock portion.

"In rust we trust" will help us document these. I have seen several bock doner lids. They all have cracked rims on the lids and were bumpy. Lifting the lid at the seam will reveal if the can has a doner lid.
There were several 333 Pilsner cans found with bock lids that were either short or relidded. I think this is an ad on CL with one. I asked for pics of the lids, I never get a response.

@CMD Dan.....Is there documented production of Mile Hi bock? I couldn't find any ads but that doesn't mean it was never done......Most of the Mile Hi beer ads were in New Mexico so it might have been a "source" issue (i.e. no Colorado papers in the database).

There is a completed bock composite and maybe it would be worth the effort to add a "lids only" tab that includes embedded images of the can and lids in the excel spreadsheet.........

Any volunteers to take on that task??

If you go to Mr. Karasek's MAGNIFICENT work of scanning the Merry Bockster mags, you'll find an article about Bock lidded cans, and a composite. I agree, they add a bit of value to a can, due to the short run nature of the beast.IF they are legit, of course!
I believe the composite has something around 50+ cans documented with Bock lids.

I was able to document the Mile Hi from Chick Runges collection. It was listed in the original Colorado composite by Walt Herget, which was compiled well before any relidding. Kind of an oddity since Tivoli was brewing and canning Tivoli Bock at the same time. The other Tivoli can with a Bock lid is the Western Premium label from the 50's. It has a CCC bock lid but the can is Pacific Can Co. It is NOT a relid. It had some beer left in it when I got it. Also dumped a 6 pack back in the early 80's.

@MI-Cans @Jim Romine Jim and Edski.....thanks for putting a ribbon on this topic.

Edski....I was hoping you might be able to pull the Bock Lid composite above and add it as a tab to the existing Bock composite here (Danny @idigrust might have to add it to the master once you have a completed list.... http://www.therustybunch.com/phpBB3/vie ... 99&t=23711

Everybody else.....please review the bock lid composite above and see if you have any thing else to add. Photos and confirmation of any way that the can was not the product of a relid would be greatly appreciated.......

OK, Keith. I'll work on it.

Remember to thank Randy because posts like that wouldn't be possible without the time and effort he put into that program. While it may not be end-all of hobby related information out there, I challenge anyone to come up with a better resource.
