Bob Kay, RIP

#1

Post by Jim Romine »

Bob Kay, label collector extraordinaire, and a true gentleman in the hobby, passed away early this morning after a long illness. He wasn't a Rusty Buncher, but there are few in this hobby who contributed more to the gathering and documenting of beer history than Bob. He wrote the definitive reference on Mini bottles in the 70's, and that book has stood the test of time very well. His multi-volume books on Pre-Pro through IRTP beer labels will never be surpassed. He amassed what must be considered the most comprehensive beer label collection ever gathered. A quiet, reserved guy, who always had a smile and time to talk. Still waters run deep, and that describes Bob. I lost an old friend, and the hobby lost an institution.
He leaves behind his wife Marilou and son Forrest. Please keep them in your thoughts.
Jim

Too much of this lately.

I knew he had the label book, I did not know about the mini-bottles book. Did he have a web site too?
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

I always admired Bob's passion for what he did. We truly lost a good guy and a giant in this hobby.

Bought many rare labels off of Bob over the years that built my Salem Brewery Association collection. This is a surprise since I just bought one off him about a month ago. My heart goes out to his family.

I spoke with Bob back in 2010 for this story. I remember his soft-spoken nature and deep knowledge of breweries.

Well stated and beautifully said. I'm hopeful someone will pick up his torch and keep this fascinating segment of the hobby moving ahead.

Sad news indeed. While not a label collector myself, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to pick up a couple of fantastic, very tough pre pro WV labels from my hometown courtesy of Jim Romine via Bob.
