Soda Cone Tops

#1

Post by willssoda »

Been collecting soda cans for about 18years and in this time I have been collecting soda cone tops. Best I can tell there are about 250 known soda cones consisting of 6, 9, 12, 32 ounce and if you consider snap caps (I think the Pabst snap cap can is considered a quart cone top?) a cone then you have to include the Coke Cola Gallons. With that being said, I have only been able to collect about 100 +/- of these different sizes. My questios are as follows:
How many soda cones are there?
Do you think that anyone could ever collect or has collected all the soda cones?
Do you have any doubles you would want to trade or sell?

A couple years ago when I first joined there was a collector from I think Hickory, NC who claimed to have all but like 2-3? Anyone know how to get in touch with him? I think he was banned from the RB but.....not sure why.

Lastly, can/ would you share how many you have and possibly a picture? Just dig these crazy things....also, if interested in trading or selling let me know what you got and what your interested in. I once offered a collector a .56 acre lot for his collection and he seemed interested, but he had already sold off like half of what he had so we couldn't make the deal......

There are a couple of collections with most of them. I did an appraisal for a collection in the south maybe 15 years ago that had every rare cone - at least the 12 and quarts. The owner was anonymous to me as I did the appraisal through an intermediary. I'm not familiar with the NC reference. There were some old time collectors who had things that still haven't come out. Wonder what happened to these pre-internet collections???y

The total number of soda cones is a bit higher than that. I think it is more like 275. I've been stuck right on 200 for a long time. Not even a sniff at anything new for a while. I know that there are at least two collections out there that are in the 225-230 range. I've been told - by the guy that sold them - about a collection of 40 indoor quarts that changed hands more than ten years ago, but not sure who got them. I think that a lot of the cans missing in the larger collections are the Mission cans that are like impossible to find for the most part.

Since I keep a (Beer Cone Top) composite and recently started collecting soda Cone tops I thought I would start keeping a soda cone top composite also.

The logical start was just to go through the "Collectible Soda Cans" book and make a list of what was in there.

That is pretty much where it is at right now as I have only added 1 minor variation since I started it. My soda composite shows a total of 281 cones (all sizes). It is not near as detailed as I keep for the beer but that may change in the future. If you know of any cones not shown (including minor variations) I would love to know about them to add them to my composite.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
What have you found that is not listed? I’d like to add the variation to the guide.

Matt,
Are you referencing the Kiddsoda quart collection or was there another that changed hands. I know who the initial buyer was - don’t know if the cans are still together now though. I think the original asking price was was in the 27k range. Not a lot by today’s prices.

200 is an amazing number! I’m at 84, but have not been too aggressive on multiple flavors. I did lose out on the Jic Jac group that went to northern New England a few years back! Still upset about losing those. Incredibly clean cans!

On a side note, anyone interested in working on a soda cone book? I have been thinking about starting a hardcover project showing larger pics displaying 3 sides of each can with population estimates and any other info available. Getting pics will take some work though.

Happy new year everyone!

Thx,
DT

I Think I remember that 40 indoor quarts collection. it was on ebay for like $30,000 10 or 15 years ago. And it was not kidssoda. I might have a pic of those cans somewhere. LEON.

It was the Paradise cone that we discussed in this thread. Just a minor variation.

I found that ebay Auction. It was in 2002. it was only 24 Quart Soda Cones. Got 37 bids & high bid was by kiddsoda for $36,100.00 but Reserve was not met. SO, Not sure if it Actually sold. If so that's well over $1,000 a can. Here's a sample Pic. LEON.

I'm fairly certain that no one has ever collected every soda cone known. In fact, I'm skeptical that any has come closer than 2-3 dozen of having a complete collection. There are too many one of a kind examples and quite a number of variations that have been turned up in recent years.

Personal collecting tastes will vary, but I consider the Coke Gallons to be part of my cone top collection. I also display all the "cereal beverage" (non alcoholic) cone tops with my sodas. These include 3 Schmidt Selects and the Goetz Cereal Beverage. I also include the Dr. Phillips grapefruit juice with my soda cones.

All told, I'm up in the 230's for my collection. I will try to post pics later this week.

I wasn't aware that there had been an update to the Collectible Soda Cans book. It is available to view on line. So I have updated my composite to include the new variations. Total soda cones now at 324. I'm sure there are quite a few minor variations out there yet to be recorded.....seam and canning co. variations, etc.

Some more perspective for this thread - last July I reached 200 soda cones. Last week - finally - the number became 201. Not from a lack of trying and looking for sure! They are just tough to find. Matt
