Look What Turned Up In Maine
Puffdaddy and I got on leap day 2/29 to do some digging and spent most of the day driving, but hit a quart dump near the end of the day he had found last fall. Armed with detectors we each bagged a dozen or so quarts. Most of the them were Esslinger's Premium Ales and Fitzgerald Pale Ales, but I was able to unearth two tough PA Ale quarts. Only one cleaned up and it was after two acid baths. I think I'm going to need to spray it with some clear coat to make it readable. Never knew Old Reading Ale's were sold in ME. Now I know.
Thanks. Dave

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
Great Can! Probably shouldn't be replying to this as this isn't my specially in the hobby. If memory serves me correctly I believe that four on grade examples of this Quart appeared at the Brimfield Auction years ago. New England is the Ale Capital so it could be that this was the target area to market the cans. On a side note- that can should of been made as a 12 ounce cone but hasn't made an appearance yet. Super Find!

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
I couldn't agree more with barfly. Some great PA ale cans have been found in New England. Far more than have ever been found in PA herself. The Old Reading Ale 12oz J spout must have been made but none have ever been found, at least not yet. If one ever does show up I'm sure it will be in New England. Probably by Dave.

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
Thanks guys. Patience, persistence and the love of the hunt are what drives me. Credit for finding the dump goes to my digging buddy Puffdaddy.
Thanks. Dave

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
Dave.....great find....what is interesting is that it got my curiosity so I did a query for Old reading Ale in my newspapers.com account and there was a listing for Old Reading Ale sold in bottles in West Palm Beach Florida in a 28 June 1940 posting. Sadly to get to the full article they want you to pay another $139.00....here is what you can view....I'm going to see if I can pull up any additional postings......

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
Dwight, I found it using my detector. Puffdaddy had been to this dump before, but without his detector so we went back and both used our detectors. It was pretty deep in the ground. Keith: Love your newspaper clippings. I suspect the can was a traveler from PA, although Puffdaddy and I have dug the 12 oz. Old Reading Beer J-Spouts at a dump in ME before.
Thanks. Dave

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
I dug an Old Reading beer quart along with Baldy Kruegers ales near Lake Sabago with Marc Tracy a week after 9/11 2001, so they were definitely sold in Maine or at least this is limited evidence of that.
"Although the cans will be of no value after opened, their cost is expected to be small..." Iowa: June 22, 1935
Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
@hemmings I went back to look again at newspapers.com since I decided to upgrade my subscription Plenty of references to Old Reading ale but none include any indication of it being in a can...Surprisingly plenty was advertised all over Florida....and I would have enjoyed seeing this in a can as well..

Re: Look What Turned Up In Maine
That last Ad looked more like a 1950's version of the Old Reading cones. LEON.
