U & L Permit Numbers

#1

Post by Rand »

There is an excellent website chock full of information on U-Permit numbers. It can be found here:

http://www.mi-brew.com/permits/Default.htm

I am uncertain about the future of this site or who currently is maintaining it. Because of that, I would like to "mirror" this information to another location in order to maximize the chances of its long term survival. If anybody knows the status of Gary's site or who is maintaining it, please let me know.

Asked a more cumbersome version of this question in the General Disc. so will put it here more succinctly:

Has anyone tried making a list of the flats and cones that have U permit numbers on them?
and a follow-up: Are there any cans with an L Permit on them at all? Below is a pair of Gluek Bock labels- the top one is post pro and has both a U and L permit number so it seems possible a can could have had them as well. Just noticed the Bock does not say L permit just has MN 1 which as you can see on the Brew is their L Permit number....hmmm

Will start going page by page in the Lilek book first... Not sure how to look at cones without having them in hand....

I have the U-Permits listed on my cone top composite. Should be pretty accurate.

Thanks, Will grab it and start making a list of all cans I can find with them. Saw a good comment by Wheaton in the thread about the Class can that mentioned several brands with U perms too. Thanks for the heads up. Andy

The Lilek books will probably be the best resource for flat tops, though I expect there are a handful of non-OI's with U-Permit numbers - the only ones that comes to mind right now are some Monarch cans and the post-war B&B Special Export, which is a definite oddity.

Many 1935 cans have the U-Permit, and a good number of 1936 cans do also. Pabst apparently dropped the U-Permit when the requirement was rescinded, but some others did not.

The earliest Ebling's and Fitzgerald's cans carried U-Permits and NYSABCB numbers, and early Bay States carried both U-Permits and Mass. License numbers.

Bizarrely, the only New Jersey can I find with a U-Permit number is the Krueger's Special. One would expect several other Krueger's cans to have it, and Ballantine's and Christian Feigenspan were in cans very early as well.

I have cans with U-Permits from Northampton, Fitzgerald's, Peter Fox, Adam Scheidt, Pabst, Globe (MD),
Monarch, Forest City, Wehle, Pittsburgh, Old Dutch, ABC and Red Top, including multiples from most of them.

If anybody can document them and post to this thread for future reference, it would be appreciated. After which I'll clean up the discussion here.
