Re: Date Breweries Signed with Can Companies
I think you are missing Star Brewery - Hop Gold. I believe some of those can date to at least Dec 35.... I have in my collection Jan 6, 1936 on the lid, so I know they are a little eairler than that.

Re: Date Breweries Signed with Can Companies
What is the date code on the Hop Gold? The date on the lid is a "brewed by" date, and the beer would have been aged prior to canning...so the can was most likely filled in March or April of 1936.
That said, there are known issues with the list. One, California Brewing Assn. is listed as signing with American Co., but the product would have been the first Acme can...a Pacific Can Co. can. Two, Aztec Brewing Co. is also listed as signing with American Can Co. The earliest can I'm aware of by Aztec is the LP ABC cone, which to my knowledge doesn't appear in print ads until September of 1936, when the first ads for non-FBIR cones appeared. I don't know the origin of the list, but it has been published in two different beer can books and also was included in the BCCA's 50th Anniversary (of the beer can) newsletter.
It also appears that the cans were not issued in the order of the brewery signings...most of the cones were out in time to be shown in the January, 1936 Fortune magazine article 'Beer Into Cans', but many of the flats (especially those by American Can Co.) were not. Of the breweries listed as signing with American Can Co. from October 1935 on, only Hamm's and Manhattan are known to have produced cans bearing 'Patent Pending'.

Re: Date Breweries Signed with Can Companies
Marc- there is no date code on my Hop Gold. Kevin's book says the first couple HGs are from late 1935. I would assume that since the top lid was the last thing put on the can when it was filled with beer, that the date on the lid is when it was filled. Now on the early Lucky cans with the date on the bottom, I would agree that the can was filled at a later date.

Re: Date Breweries Signed with Can Companies
Ed - There are a few things in Kevin's book that I question, especially some of the dates. But, either way, the Hop Gold says "BEER BREWED BEFORE DATE DATE SHOWN ON TOP OF CAN". I agree that the date stamp was added after the can was filled, but the reason some brewers dated their beer was to assure the customer that the beer was properly aged. I'll have to do some digging around - I know I've read a couple articles about this, but I don't recall where they were published.

Re: Date Breweries Signed with Can Companies
There are pictures in the Jan '36 Fortune Magazine of Pabst Export cans running thru the filling lines upside down and having the bottom lids applied after filling.Cap-Sealed wrote:I would assume that since the top lid was the last thing put on the can when it was filled with beer, that the date on the lid is when it was filled.
Dates could easily be applied running the cans thru an ink stamp machine on the line for the tops or bottoms for brewery codes, dates, etc.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Re: Date Breweries Signed with Can Companies
Lid dating is tricky . I have seen a Rainier cone with 1 16 35 on the lid. Some cans are sample cans to brewers before beer is put in.
