Re: The Legend Lives On.....
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early
The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconson
As the big freighters go it was bigger than most
With a crew and the Captain well seasoned.
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ships bell rang
Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling.
The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashing
When afternoon came it was freezing rain
In the face of a hurricane West Wind
When supper time came the old cook came on deck
Saying fellows it's too rough to feed ya
At 7PM a main hatchway caved in
He said fellas it's been good to know ya.
The Captain wired in he had water coming in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the words turn the minutes to hours
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd fifteen more miles behind her.
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.
Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the ruins of her ice water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams,
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered.
In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Superior, they say, never gives up her dead

Re: The Legend Lives On.....
When I was a child, I used to ride my bike down to the docks in Lorain, Ohio, and wait for the ore freighters to come in. For awhile, I thought working on an ore freighter would be the coolest job. Plus, you'd be off all winter while the lake is frozen. Can you say extended spring break in Florida???
Lorain had a basquele bridge that rose every time an ore freighter would come or go. Think of the opening scene of The Bob Newhart Show. Those bridges at a 45 degree angle on the river are basquele bridges. On the other side of the bridge was American Ship, where the ore freighters were built. The shipyard was owned by none other than George Steinbrenner. That's where he made the money he used to but the Yankees.
When I had a chance in 01, I bought a Pfeiffer can with the ore freighter on it. Kinda a nostalga trip, which I guess this thread is also.

Great posts guys! I remember I was doing my Detroit News paper route when I saw the headlines. I remember the experts saying how bad the storm must have been because by '75 freighters didn't sink anymore on the Great Lakes.
May they rest in peace.

True, but many of those ships were built in Ghio, and they used to bring iron ore to Ohio.

Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York and all the the St. Lawrence Seaway of Canada can take credit for the Awesomness that is Great Lakes Shipping!
For all the information you'll ever need, check out Boatnerd.com. I've been visiting that site since 1997. I used to contribute to the news page when my job took me along the Detroit River a few times a week. Now, I only cruise the shorline once a week and shipping has dwindled over the years so much, it's rare when i actually see one. Did catch the Buffalo last Wednesday.

Re: The Legend Lives On.....
I read just yesterday that the guy for whom the boat was named after--Edmund Fitzgerald, died only about 10 years ago or so, and that he had never HEARD the song!!! (according to the children of him). How can one go through life and not hear that song, even by chance?? And if one is associated with it like he was, how is that even possible?
Maybe what I read was incorrect info.....But I know what I read.

If you're interested in Great Lakes maritime history and happen to find yourself in the northeastern UP, this is a great place to visit. The artifacts and the lighthouse tour are worth the price of admission, and they also have a small theater set up where you can watch a very moving tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald and the crew.

Re: The Legend Lives On.....
Gordon Lightfoot certainly hit a homer with the song. I've seen the video on the dive to recover the bell, and it looked like the ship was just torn to pieces. Must have been one hell of a storm. Rest in peace.

Re: The Legend Lives On.....
Here's the website where the Museum probably got their model. This company makes incredible museum quality models of ships, planes, and trains. If you want your own copy of the Edmund Fitzgerald, it'll only cost you $9,500 bucks.
