A Metal Detecting Find

#1

Post by Digger_Jim »

Nudie Beach in VT was pretty bare today as you can see. And speaking of bear, I found this antique trap in the woods behind the beach. Looks too small to be a bear trap, but still it's a nice find!

It's looking like I won't find a name on it. It's pretty pitted where the manufacture mark should be, but I do plan on carefully cleaning it!

Of course almost anything old is collectible but how big is the market for old bear traps? I can see where somebody would like to use one as a decoration in a cabin but is this a $50 item or a $500 item?

Maybe you could find more of these. July would probably be a good time to go back and look around. :)
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

There are some very expensive traps out there due to their rarity. There are price scales placed on them and books dedicated towards them as pricing guides. Highly collected are the bear traps! I have never done a census on how many collectors are out there for these this, and doubt anyone else has done so either. It could be high in the numbers... There are a lot of hunters out there that won't tell you how many guns they own, do you think they will tell you they collect rare traps also?
