I went exploring today for something other than beer cans, and I thought you guys might enjoy it.
I always wanted to explore an abandoned mine and now living in the west has given me the opportunity to do so.
This is the Lukcy Star mine that was abandoned in about 1920. Silver, Lead and Zinc was mined here. Enjoy.
The mine was pretty far back into the mountains but is very close to the old road. Even though it is close to the road, you have to know exactly where it is or you will miss it.
This picture show the trail. The mine is just up the hill in those rock outcroppings.
The climb was up an incredibly steep grade, and the loose shale made it extremely difficult.
I was standing straight up in the picture and it shows the approximately 45 degree grade.
Here is the entrance.
There is about 1000' of tunnel on 3 levels. You could see where the ore vanes ended in the walls but unfortunately those pictures didn't come out.
The tracks for the ore cars are still there in many places. They are wooden with a metal rail on the top edge. The sharp curves are made of all metal.
The old ladder to the second level was still there. I never went up to the third level. That ladder was long gone and it involved a little more climbing than I was willing to do.
Yep, lots of these little guys. This one looked a bit perturbed that we interrupted his sleep.
The second level had a still intact wooden doorway that I presume led to where the miners dumped the tailings.
Looking out the wooden door. It was a long way down.

Conehead,
Be careful in those old mines. The oxygen levels in those things can get depleted from poor airflow and CO2 can build up. You might want to invest in a Oxygen/CO2 sensor if you want to hit these mines.
