General Question on Jolly Good & Can Collecting in General

#1

Post by WishItWas1984 »

Hello,

I've been a collector for 22 years now. Primarily a toy collector, but I have some games, geek-related art and other bits of pop culture.

One of my may interests is in the product packaging design. The art and style of it. To that end I have some cereal boxes, 1960s juice flats, Kool-Aid packets, candy packages, etc..

What I never had was a soda can. I've browsed them off and on for years but never added any until today. I bought my first Jolly Good can (Orange Soda).

There's just something about that graphic design and color that I love. It screams 60s/70s.

I just have 2 questions.

1) How can I date a can? Are there any telltale signs from the can itself? Perhaps from the history of the soda? All I can tell is that the old Jolly Good cans look the part of a 60s/70s product. Definitely pre-1974 from the steel can, pull-tab opening and lack of barcode.

2) Is there a resource for Jolly Good in general? How many colorful steel cans did they make?

Thanks

Welcome aboard and great to see you've bitten into the forbid fruit and are now interested in a broader range of cans....hope we can also get you interested in beer cans since many have striking graphics as well......this forum is a great place to get your soda can related items address and there is a wealth of knowledge here to be shared....

One of the folks you might want to reach out to is Dave Tanner @dtsoc here on the board. He has put together an updated catalog of known cans. It can be found at his website http://www.collectiblesodacans.com/

Thank You!

From the PDF of that guide I've narrowed it down to 1968-1973.

I came to that from the earliest the lid was produced ('68) and the fact that it has no barcode, which was introduced in'74.

Now it could be 1974-1975 I guess since I imagine it took a while for everyone to start barcoding every can.

Nice thread! I may actually partake in that but I honestly need to figure out where to display the one can I am getting. lol

I have an idea in the kitchen, but I'd need to figure out if cheap, clear acrylic/plastic holders are available somewhere, or maybe something at The Container Store can be repurposed to protect it. And I need to see if it'll block the view of my cereal box collection that's above that area. :)

I'm hoping it works because that'll give me a nice row for a bunch of cans!

Will do! I had no idea that was even a thing until I found one Jolly Good thread here. Should be getting it next week.

Interestingly enough, there is no joke printed on the inside of the Jolly Good Orange that I just got.

You have a few options when it comes to protecting your can gems....
First there are vinyl wraps available at the BCCA http://www.bcca.com/shop/can-wraps/
and then if you want to go deeper you can get beer can keepers from one of our fellow members Jeff @BeerCanKeeper here http://www.beercankeeper.com/

The older Jolly Good cans don't have jokes in them, the plain ones without the "is Really Good!" starburst do not have jokes- Bjorn

That's a bummer.....I loved the jokes when I was a kid!!
Approx. what year did they start putting jokes in them?

I remember when the jokes started showing up and one summer we suddenly started slamming JG as fast as possible to read the jokes! - so I looked in the book and the "is Really Good" starburst(let's call it) showed up on the cans in '75. I don't see the plain tabtop cans without jokes that often, I only have three and the Root Beer is one of those plain silver flattops- Bjorn

Nice! Thanks! I will likely get a Beer Can Keeper once I figure out where I'm putting this.
