2 mystery cans

#1

Post by dgcans »

On a recent dig I found these 2 juice tops. One is Sego (liquid diet food??) and the other is Kayo. The Kayo is just a regular chocolate drink but the Sego really confuses me. The Sego is a juice top 10 ounce can and it also has a barcode on side. I haven't ever heard of a juice top can having a barcode until now. Hopefully one of you can tell me what these two cans are. Thanks.

I thought bar codes began appearing on cans in 1979. Can't remember where I read that but that's what I recall. Perhaps it was beer cans and not all cans. I'll try to find some more information for you.

Juice tabs were used on on juices (hence the name), nectars, diet drinks / shakes, mixers and other non-carbonated drinks well into the 80's.

Correct, the first commercial bar codes did appear in 1974 but that was on packs of gum. I believe he is more interested in dating cans. According to breweriana.com the first bat codes on beer cans appeared in 1979. I just can't find when they first appeared on soda or juice cans to help him further.

Barcode or UPCs were used as early as 1976 (for Canada) as documented in the Canadian soda can Archive. As far as I know this is the earliest can that I have with a bar code that I can put a year to.... I'll have to check over some other cans to see if there any before this one.

Just want to mention this detail on the can, the offer expires May 31 1976....would it not stand to reason that an offer would be valid for six months?..if so that put this can at 1975.
