World Champion Clydesdale [ITEM IS SOLD!, but updated info]

#1

Post by BostonBob »

Hi all,

I really wanted this to go to somebody on the RB. If there is no interest, I will have to deal with the dregs on Craigslist :(

If you collect signs, you saw my original post. My price is still $500 firm, but I would consider trades for clean flats or crowntainers as partial payment. Please PM me if any interest. For people in New England, I may be able to assist with delivery for added costs.

BONUS:

To sweeten the pot, I will also include, free of charge, this second Busch/Budweiser sign. The light still works and it looks like it was assembled on a Monday with the Busch logo and the bucket of Buds. Anyway, it is still pretty cool. It is approximately 4 feet long.

ORIGINAL CLYDESDALE LISTING:

I have decided to sell my Budweiser World Champion Clydesdale Team lighted sign. I inherited this sign from my grandfather back in 1992. I had hoped to someday have a basement display area, but I don't see that happening for the next decade, at least.

This sign has been carefully stored away all this time. The light still works and the bubble is very clean with only very small, barely noticeable scratches. This is the earlier version that had the tan/burlap material around the outer edge, which typically opened up at the seams (if you are familiar with these, it is fairly common and the seams turned an ugly dark brown from the glue). My grandfather removed the 'burlap' surround and I removed all the glue residue with Goof Off. I recently cleaned and polished the plastic bubble with 'Novus' products which are specifically formulated for cleaning and polishing these plexi-glas type cases. (I also use Novus on my Matchbox display cases).

This sign displays beautifully and would be great for anyone who has the proper wall space to display it. Get YOUR man cave ready for the holidays :)

(BTW, I had this sign at Keith Norton's show last week and received a lot of compliments. If you want a second opinion on the condition, ask someone who was at the show.)

You can research the prices. For the Rusty Bunch gang, I am pricing this at only $500 and will consider can trades for partial payment. My price is firm and I am only interested in clean/shiny flats or cones as trades. If you are interested, let me know what you have.

Obviously, shipping this item would be a huge PITA and not recommended. I would prefer a buyer who can pickup the item (in Tewksbury, MA), but I will consider delivery possibilities in the New England area.

Please post any questions here or via PM. Here are the pics:

Thanks! BostonBob

Awesome sign in beautiful condition. I have always liked that sign. Is it really a 50's sign? I have always assumed it was mid 70's.

As for the age, I did not find a specific sticker. I have done some research and there are 6 breweries listed on the wagon. That may mean something to someone. This sign had the tan/burlap pattern surround and the later version had red paper around the outside. I saw one person saying it was 1954 and another said 1968. It was "acquired" in the 1970s or 80s (pretty sure the statute of limitations has run out on that action ;) ).

At this point, I already have 1 buyer and 1 backup. I should have put this on the auction thread to see what the true "value" is on RB. I think it was priced fairly. I am sure I could have sold it for more, but my grandfather (and I) would be happy to know it is hanging on a collector's wall. :smt023

I can't see the pic here at work, but if it has 6 breweries, Columbus was the Anheuser-Busch 6th brewery opened in 1968. Jacksonville, the 7th, was opened in 1969. So that would confirm the 1968 date. Anheuser-Busch only had three breweries in 1954.

Jeff, I think you nailed it. It must be 1968 then. Columbus is on there, but Jacksonville is not. Thank you!

Hi all - this sign is available again. Due to logistics, I was unable to close the deal with the first bidder.

Glenn - I sent you two PMs, but I am not sure if they are going through. Please PM me if you are still interested. Thanks!

If you really want it, there must be a way to get it. With people always traveling around to different shows, it seems like there would be a way to get it from him to you.

Harvest has started at work and I cannot get away. During this time of year, any vacation requests would be denied. Would love to visit New England though.

Holy cow! This is an old post. I sold that to someone on Craigslist for about $400. I think I tried to sell for over 1 year and finally got sick of towing it around and storing it. I "re-invested" the funds into some nice cans :) The sad thing was when I first got it, I was told it was worth $2k, but the values have dropped. I think there are plenty of them out there. Good luck in your search!

Thanks for letting me know. Condition is very importsnt on these and the first year they had burlap front around dome. Those will get 1500 easy. Any damage at all lowers them a lot. I think yours was an easy 8 to 9 hundred. I wish i found it sooner.

Oh well! I had it at a few shows in 2014...even the Seekonk show if I recall correctly, but no bites. Life is all about the timing :)

PS - I think this had the burlap, but it was removed somewhere along the line.

Prices are VERY different now from 2014. I still think you did OK for 2014 prices. We all have a story of a can or a sign that we carry around forever and can't for the life of us understand why it hasn't sold.....lol.

Thanks Scott! I agree with your assessment.

The truth is I did not sell it because I needed the money, but rather that I was tired of storing it. At approximately six feet in length, it was a two man lift for safe handling. It sat in my attic for roughly 12 years and it was time to sell it. I knew there was a limited market of buyers who could store a 6 foot sign, so I decided to sell it and move on.

This is the 30" model of the Clydesdales that I made with the help of my grandfather. It is priceless to me and it currently sits in my family room and I get to enjoy it every day. I Love it! Happy New Year to all!
