Canvention room to room trading question

#1

Post by Tom Clark »

This will be my first canvention since the one in St. Louis in 1995. I will be arriving Tuesday afternoon. I just read the canvention agenda booklet but my question is do I need to bring my own door stopper to keep my door open or are they furnished. I guess I could just make one from wood. What does everyone else do?

Tom.....you can only imagine some of the ideas folks come up with to keep their room door propped open....if you have one suggest you bring it with...if not you'll have to get inventive with towels and hangers.......

I had mine propped open with a piece of cardboard last year but it was not working too well. Aussie Keith came into my room and in about literally three seconds managed to secure it open by putting a coat hanger over the hinge at the top. He reached up there, gave it a little twist and the door was secured in an open position. I tried to replicate it later but was not able to figure out what he did.

What was truly impressive was how quickly he managed to do it when you consider doors close backwards in the southern hemisphere...

Not all clothes hangers fit under the door. Registration isnt til Wednesday so if you arrive tuesday I would advise bringing something. Thanks for reminding me to bring a doorstop. Tom

Best I saw was in Vegas. Standard sloped block of wood, but with a hatchet blade embedded at the end, handle upwards. Quick glance looked like owner had hacked into the floor! He got more than one "complaint" from hotel staff before they realized just normal door stop.

Thanks for the ideas guys! I just made one out of 1"x 2" board. It measures 3/4" wide by 4" long by 1" sloped down to nothing height. I would think that should work!

One convention there was actually small wooden doorstops given in the goody bag. I had it for several years, but it has disappeared and now I struggle to figure something out each time at a show. Not that this info really helped, but perhaps people in charge of upcoming canventions may take note........?

I have 2 from previous canventions, and still use them. Another suggestion, bring something to stick out in the hall so we can see your room is open. It helps, especially if you're the only open room in a hallway. Also, bring lots of cash to buy stuff with!

Be sure to pack your artisanal door stop in checked luggage or conform to TSA requirements. Door stops are not a right. They are a privilege.
