Regal Detroit paint overs

#1

Post by Ziphippie »

I found these paintovers awhile back and sold some of the Regal Detroit with Ohio Beer Tax Paid 1cent caps that I had rubbed out on eBay. I found some other interesting labels-Blatz, yellow/red bocks and some green ones I can't figure out, under the maroon overpaint. What is the scoop on these? they were all together in a pickle jar. I'm still rubbing... Bjorn

Home-use bottle caps used to be a bigger deal than they are now. The bottle cap makers would take the overruns and paint a solid colored disk of maroon or green or orange over the unwanted design and sell them in boxes as home-use crowns for making homebrew or birch beer or sarsaparilla or what have you. Finding paintover caps and cleaning them is a great way to find rare or unknown caps. Those Regal Ohio caps were pretty darn tough before you found a boatload of them.

Too bad I did not find any one-of-a-kind air freshener flat sheets at that garage sale or I'd be set. The guy wanted $20 for a "small" boatload/jar of caps so I offered him a dollar for one and took my keys to that bugger right in front of him- then I gave him $20. here is my shelfer after some love- Bjorn

They are Quevic Vichy sparkling water caps from Saratoga Springs, NY.

I am curious about the yellow cap all the way to the right.

BTW you did an excellent job of cleaning the Regal caps...

That's often the way with paintovers for some reason...a ton of one or two kinds and then just one oddball. Ed Johnson found a big box of paintovers, maybe 125 or so, and every one of them was an Old Milwaukee Alabama Tax crown (from the 1930's), and then there was one lonely Waldorf PA Tax crown - super rare then, and still super rare now!

As far as i know thats a generic Bock cap that could be found on any bock bottle. Comes in different colors also. Some have been found on Sebewaing bocks & others. LEON.

I have a white/red on a Huber and white/blue from West Bend Lithia, so this was a nice addition to my very small local collection. I sold the caps on eBay before I found the Rusty Bunch. I found some more you may or may not like that I'm not attached to. Do used caps have less value? The colors look different on these- I don't know, I just collect cans Bjorn

I think used or unused price would depend on condition. I have some Fox Deluxe caps like that. They go good with my cones. LEON.
