Putting Name To A Given Face

#1

Post by Randy Karasek »

The purpose of this thread is to allow anyone to post a picture + name with the intent of better getting to know everyone. While we see many faces at shows and read many names on this site, it is not always obvious what name goes with that face. Toward the end of the year I would like to work with Chris Taylor and produce a "Rustlings Yearbook" issue, capturing all these posts.

Recommended post is something like:

plus whatever other comments you want to include describing yourself, interests, other hobbies, family, funny quote, whatever.

==================================================================================

This is going to be a heavily moderated thread with the following rules:
  1. One post per person, period. You can edit your one post and change your picture or comments as many times as you like
  2. Keep comments at worst PG-13. Anything inappropriate will be removed as fast as possible.
  3. See rule #1. Absolutely no additional posts, wise azz comments, etc. Learn how to start a new thread if you feel the need.
Please keep this thread to its original intent. Thank you.

Iggyks - Kevin Macy, RB 1064. Collected around age 12-16 (late 1970s) and recaught the bug about a year and a half ago. Have found a couple hundred 1954 Schlitz flats since then, but I'm sure there are thousands more out there waiting for me

I collected as a kid back in the 70's living in Cleveland, OH and life events took me away from the hobby until August of 2011 when I found an old camp dump in Maine. I always loved digging in old dumps and hunting for cans so finding the old dump was just the spark I needed to get back into collecting beer cans. I collect all cans that I dig, but specialize in Cleveland cans, New England cans, Pabst, Krueger and Yuengling cans. Married with two girls (20 & 17) now living in New Hampshire. My hobbies are woodworking (I make Adirondack chairs), working out, music, anything outdoors and Cleveland sports (I know it's very painful).

Hey fellas-
As kids, we scoured the ditches of SE Minnesota for aluminum cans, and thats when I noticed all of these cool Schmidt outdoor scenic cans. Like a lot of you, I started the "bedroom can pyramid" then graduated to wooden can shelves in the basement. My Dad brought home a full six pack of Gluek Silver growlers he'd bought at a general mercantile store, and needless to say,I had no problem trading them off at the beer can show in Rochester.

I restarted in 1996, after my parents threatened to throw my cans out. I recycled 99% of them (sob) as they were collected for quantity. I kept my best Gluek crowntainer and the box, as well as a large tin Gluek sign, which started my passion for Gluek's. I have two girls (15 & 17) and remarried in 2008.Just celebrated my sixth anniversary (today) and figured that having a child was not in the cards. God has a sense of humor though, and we now have a newborn boy to pass all this crap and info on to. My wife's Grandpa was the Hamm's brewmaster,so I have a free pass to bring cool Hamm's stuff into the beer room anytime.

I probably have a mere 15 cans, and a dedicated "beer room" decorated with Minnesota stuff and whatever catches my eye. I value the stories (and people that tell them) above any "stuff" I have. Beer people are good people. And a helluva' lotta' fun!

Randy Karasek, married 28 years now, two great kids both in college and now out of the house.
In addition to my wife just a couple cavalier king charles spaniels at home.
Home is in beautiful Pebble Beach, California, never any "polar vortex" or that white stuff that falls from the sky.
Used to have a pretty decent Michigan collection, got rid of that in 2007, and now just collect California straight steel tab tops.
Manager of a small software company in Monterey.
Author of the BMV software and website http://www.mbcinfo.com

I am the one of the left below. Pictured on the right is Mr John McGuire, a long time collecting friend and someone every collector should meet. John has some of the best stories and dumping experiences in the hobby!

Picture copped from an old Rustlings. I'm in the middle, with the goofy but eminently comfortable dumping hat. Angry Gary saw the picture back then and asked if I was getting ready for the Crusades.

Guilty of often changing collection focus. I've recently been branded an "information collector" as opposed to a legitimate, functioning, useful can collector. I have been on 14oz cans lately and am also re-starting quart cones. Have specialized since 1990, to greater or lesser degrees, in: Michigan cans, cones in general, Art Deco-styled cans (expensive and far between!), odd sizers (mostly 7/8/10/14), bulb top HP cones, and US gallons. I've been known to go nutty for Deco-themed bottle labels and trays, as well, and occasionally the odd coaster if the graphics scream 30s in a good way.

Have been blessed to dump with a small but ruthless group of RB dignitaries including Mike Belanger, Chris and Mike Taylor, Dan and Gary Bora, John McLogan, Marc Tracy, Bob Haboush, Gary Allison, Steve Rhodes, Andy Caldwell, Dan Baker, Paul Letostak, Mike Bowers, and Leon Hampton. Just barely missed out on a dig with the Kottemann clan, grudgingly had to take a rain check. Have been a member of the Mile Hi Chapter, Mid-Michigan Chapter, Rusty Bunch Chapter, ABA, probably the Bullfrog Chapter and I can't remember if I officially ponied up with the Bama Cannas or Atlantic Chapters. I should probably become aware of my own affiliations. Michigan will always be home, but I've hung my hat in Indiana, Colorado, Mississippi, and lately southeast Tennessee.

Nonstop but amorphous collector since 1973. Picture taken at the esteemed and seemingly immortal Alanson dump in Alanson, Michigan.

live in suburban New Orleans, because someone has to live here.
Paralegal by day, costumed crime fighter by night.
Prefer any kind of New Orleans brewery collectibles- especially cans
Love rusty flats, some rusty cones if I can deal for them
Also love craft cans, just anything with a catchy name or that I like for one reason or another.
Besides beer stuff, I also collect comic books- favorites are Avengers and Spider-Man.
Was a huge fan of Dan Marino and remain a Dolphins fan to this day. Yes, I catch my share of grief for not pulling for the home team.

Jim Hall..........."Conehead"

I collect only cone tops, all styles, including international and sodas. I tend to gravitate towards grade 2ish condition but will put an on grade can on the shelf if the opportunity presents itself. I have also been known to put some incredibly rough cans on the shelf. If I need it, I will keep it until I can upgrade.

The name conehead was given to me by the Scoglietti brothers when I lived in New Mexico in the mid 1980's. Not only did I collect cone tops but it seamed that every time we went out dumping I was the one that founds the cones, so I became "Conehead" Jim Hall.

I collect cans, signs, bottles, bottle caps. Started collecting when I lived in Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1977.
First can was Old Chicago Dark, purchased at Sol's Delicatessen. This pic is from a couple of years ago.

Hi from Tewksbury, Massachusetts!

My name is Bob Bennett and I use the handle BostonBob on here, eBay and various other forums.

I am 47 and have a wife and two teenage sons.

I started collecting around 1977 when I was 10 years old. My neighbor, Stanley Day, moved in from Wilmington, MA and I was introduced to his collection. Back then we got most of our cans in the woods, dumping or at flea markets. Unfortunately, I only had tabs back then. My extended family was also very generous in bringing me back cans from various vacations. That was always thrilling to see what people brought me.

I should also point out that I went to high school with the can Dr, Keith Norton. Keith was always a great guy and was big into dumping even back then. I have always been a shiny can guy, but I believe Keith used to be less so. Of course, having recently seen Keith's collection in person, I was blown away and severely humbled. It is unreal and truly made me lust for more mint flats, cones and quarts. My collection is around 500 cans, but most are tabs and way too many are aluminum. I think I have 2 cones and about 50 flats. I am working on changing those ratios.

My can collecting has been put on hold for several years at various times, but luckily I always kept my cans in storage. Thank goodness! As stated above, I started at age 10 and I was pretty steady thru my teenage years. Always on the lookout for new cans. Ironically, when I turned 21, my interest waned. After I found eBay in 1995 or so, my interest was re-kindled. I could finally buy cans I could only dream about as seen in the BCC Bible! I bought and sold a bunch. I even setup a small display in my first home's spare bedroom. My collection was still full of common tabs, but around that time I ran into Keith Norton at a Can show in Southboro, MA. Keith hooked me up with some cool cans, but it was clear these "professionals" were way ahead of me. I continued to buy what I could afford on eBay.

A few years went by and I had my first son. The wife strongly suggested that I put the cans away and start collecting something "kid-friendly". Like Matchbox/Hotwheels. Check! I bought hundreds of diecast cars, lots of Hotwheels and MB. I later ventured into police cars and I now have a sizeable collection of 1/64 scale police cars. I am proud to say I currently have 1 state police model from EVERY state except Maine! (working on that). I also collect muscle cars, fire vehicles, NASCAR and Tractor Trailers (of course I have all the MB beer trucks).

Let's see - that brings us up until around 2013. I built a custom home car with a large back-bar area. What better way to decorate than to take out all my best flats and a few favorite tabs. Around the same time, I ran into a mutual friend of Keith's, Bill Lebouef. He told me Keith was having the Pickwick Chapter can sale in Haverhill, MA. I was all over that. Of course, I could not afford to buy much, but I did grab a few more flats and those promptly went onto my bar. I only have 40 cans on display today, but someday I plan to expand that. Perhaps a future mancave or possibly in the garage. Only time will tell.

Thanks for reading my story. I hope to read your stories and learn more about cans. I am certainly looking forward to the next Pickwick show and any others I can get to.
