I'm interested in gaining some information on using a Dremel for cleaning up some of the lids and seams of my decent dumpers. Does anyone have any knowledge they can share or link to a video of the procedure? What bits work best and what to avoid. Any input would be great. Forgive me if this has already been covered, I've been out of the loop for a couple years
Thanks,
Keith

Re: Using a Dremel to clean up lids and seams
I use a carbon wire brush (428). If you press too hard, it will leave a dark burn mark, so I go lightly on the seam. If the seam is real rusty, I won't bother and just clean the rims up. Oh, and if it's a real valuable can, I'll put paper tape around the paint edge to prevent slipping and marring the paint around the rims. Hope this helps.

My go to Dremel attachment for rim restoration is this one.
Practice first on some unworthy cans to get the feel of the attachment and how it removes the rust. Remember to use very light pressure. The pic below is the finished process. Rims originally looked like the one in the first pic. You can click to supersize the pics.
It came in this Ace Hardware kit. Got it a couple of years ago during a Black Friday sale. I had no idea at the time how well this little attchment would work for rims, but it's amazing. Literally eats through the rust. Use very little pressure, let it almost glide over the rim. Also use a rocking motion since the rim profile has a slight curve to it. Some emory cloth or paper will smooth out the finish. Lastly, if the rim is too shiny, I'll dull it with some Ex Rust on a Qtip.

I almost forgot the usual Gov't. warnings for idiots:
1) Be sure to wear proper eye protection.
2) Make sure to wear a dust mask, or, provide proper ventilation. Rim cleaning will create a significant dust cloud. Inhalation of this airborne dust is NOT recommended.
