Magic marker removal?

#1

Post by menke »

I know this was covered on the old board some time ago, but what methods have people found that worked to remove magic marker touch-ups? I had tried mild MEK-free lacquer thinner but it basically just smudged the marker and made it worse. Now I have a good can with some marker touch-up that I want to go away and I don't dare smudge. Help!

I’ve always had good luck with a little acetone. Dip a rag in acetone and just a little rubbing takes most markers off pretty easily. I look for marker touch-ups because I know they nearly always clean up easy like this. I don’t care for prices written the tops of my cans with marker either, so I clean those off the same way even easier than label touch ups.

I use a product designed to remove light scratches from plexiglas. It is called Novus #2. This cleaner is amazing and does a great job for regular cleaning and smoke damage as well. I just used it to un cover a Volks Brau from under a brown derby can. If you cant find it let me know. Allen #24027 rb#22

Hey Allen, nice to see on the board. I'm regretting not getting that
Blatz set from you. I haven't had a shot at the pink one since. I use Novus products here at my marina and never tried them on cans. Of course, 3M makes numerous products that I have tried, with some success. Great tip, thanks.

Currently in a collecting funk. Waiting for the bug to bite again to get back into collecting some type of cans, on a small, affordable level.

I've had mixed results using Acetone. I've found it often leaves a stain on painted surfaces--- can that be removed too? And you have to be careful not to remove paint with it.

But maybe most frustrating is that lids with finishes (ie gold) are often removed with Acetone. So you wind up with a silver lid that used to be gold.

I heard WD40 will remove markers like Sharpie. Good luck!
