Very cool idea. If someone wants to start up a list in the Excel format, let me know. Otherwise I'll get one started. My shelves won't help any, I think I only have 2.

No one has taken on this list, so I've got the cans posted here put into a composite. I also added the "Propellor" cans. My take is they were definitely gray cans, even though they are singular label cans. The list will be posted shortly.

Another topic we need to address is gray vs. enamel. For example, Bay State Ale. There is an enamel version as well as a metallic version. Would the enamel label be considered a "gray" version?

Alrighty then, I have a list ready of the cans posted here. I'll have Danny get it up and running. I'm also titling the list as WW II gray cans.

After discussing it with Rand, the Propellor cans will be left off this list. It will be a list of same label cans with a distinct "Dull Gray" counterpart.

Sorry if I mis-understood! Personally I believe the Propeller can IS dull gray. My terse little 2 letter post above was specifically to casting the Bay State enamel as dull gray. Don't think there needs to be an enamel or metallic counterpart for something to qualify as dull gray.

Sorry again

I've submitted the list as mentioned in my last post. The Propellors can always be added later. So let's get a discussion going about this. I'm in agreement with Rand, cans like the Propellor should be included. What say the rest of you?

A can that is "battleship grey" that is not most often found shiny doesn't count no matter how you look at it. Thats always been the point of pointing out the can is battleship grey. Propeller cans are not them no matter how much you want them to be. No one has ever said, "I've got a propeller can to trade, it's the battleship grey version".

Josh is right, it's the cans where the battleship gray version was a departure from the normal. The Southern Select is white, so it would not count. Rand, can you please add the USBC numbers to the list you gave when you have the chance please.

So far we are just listing the cans as Mark has stated in his post. I noticed that the flats have a commonality in that they're all OI's. If no one posts the USBC #'s by the weekend, I'll look them up and add them to the list.

I actually have a Propeller can by Schlitz that is semi-metallic green and silver. There is also an OD propellor flat by Schlitz.

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

I can think of a few crowntainers like Noch Eins, Kubler, National Boh, Fitzgerals Pale Ale, Ortiels, Hoff Brau, and Kingsbury. I'm not sure how many were in production or if they were test cans. images of the cans are available at Crowntainer Central

I believe the Propeller cans, several of them, should absolutely be listed. The dull grey color is a result of timing and cost, nothing more, and it just so happens that the propeller cans were only produced when aluminum was not available for such frivolous use as inking beer cans. The only two (non-OD) options available at that time were dull grey and the high-gloss metallic silver achieved by using a tinted clearcoat over the base metal. The process for achieving the metallic look had to cost more. Propeller flats and cones both exist in both color schemes. It's just a quirk of fate that one dull grey variation turned up in large numbers, after decades of all the variations being extremely rare. And a collector who is knowledgeable and incredibly fortunate just might say "I have a Propeller cone (or flat) by Schlitz for trade. It's the dull grey one".
