I've had this Clear Lake on the shelf for awhile, and it displayed well. But I figured it could use a make over, if you will. Clean rims and some repair to the backside would improve the overall shape of the can.
Note in the second pic the dent and hole on the back of the can. This is where the repair will administered. I decide to remove the bottom lid, which is unopened. I used a long screwdriver to push out the lid.
Once the lid is off, I use aluminum tape to back the holes from the inside of the can.
Once backed, I use the Smoller method of patching, using glue and rust powder. This is how it looks after patching and straightening out the dents (covered on a different post).
And the final pic of the cans display side with the rims cleaned. The backside is straight and patched as well as having clean rims now. The method I use for cleaning the rims will be covered in another post.

Beamer, once you get your Dremel, you too can start taking some of your cans to the spa for a make over. I sent Chris the article on rim cleaning for the next Rustlings, then I'll post it here.

Re: A day at the spa for a Clear Lake
Scott,
I look forward to the article. Quite a few of my cans could use a little "spa" time. Hopefully this weekend I will have time to go Dremel shopping.
