Need Basic Instructions for Rust Removal

We have a few dumper cans and oxalic acid and are ready to try to clean rust off cans. We don't expect to remove all rust, but to remove the superficial rust would be great.

If anyone could give instructions on how to do this, it would be great. We have a bench grinder and dremel, but are hesitant to use it on our precious cans!
