A quick oxalic bath does wonders...

...for minor rust. Some like to use it, others don't. To each his own. I used to use lemon juice back in the day but I've grown to prefer oxalic. If you watch it regularly while soaking, minor rust is no problem to remove. After washing the dirt off using a soft toothbrush with warm water and dial soap, I soaked this can for about 10 minutes in a mild oxalic bath, about a teaspoon dissolved in about 1.5 gallons of hot tap water. Just enough to submerge the can. Could've used less oxalic in that much water but I wanted a quick soak. Nice Xmas present from my bro...
